Sell high on Suppan, Marquis

I’m stumped
here.  I’ve been offered a trade that I am leaning towards.  Wanted some
input.

Yahoo 8 team head
to head (R, HR, RBI, SB, OBPS / W, S, K, ERA, WHIP).  I am sitting in 7th spot
and need to make something happen.  Although still early in the season, I am 16
games back.

My

Trade-

I give up Carl

I get Adrian

What do you

Todd,

The
first thing I’d do is get Vernon Wells back into your active roster.  Also, try
to trade one of your second basemen.  Both Kinsler and Upton have a ton of
value, and by continually benching one of them, you’re wasting a great
opportunity.  But before you work on a new trade, accept this one!  I never
thought I’d ever be saying this, but Crawford is fairly expendable here
considering the overwhelming bench depth of this team.  Add Adrian Gonzalez to
the mix, and you’ll still have a tough time deciding who to start each day.
Another reason why I like this deal is that between Hanley, Hunter, Victorino,
and Upton/Kinsler, the stolen base category should be covered even after the
departure of Crawford.

While
the Crawford to Adrian Gonzalez exchange of hitters can best be described as a
small to medium-sized loss, getting Cain and Putz for overachievers Suppan and
Marquis is nothing short of a huge win.  Since 2004, Marquis sports an ugly 6.42
ERA in the month of June, making now as good a time as any to unload him.
Lastly, let’s not overlook the acquisition of Putz, who despite some injury
concerns heading into the season has been flat out dominant (only 3 ER over 21
2/3 IP).  J.J. should go a long way towards fortifying a bullpen that was
previously on the weak side considering the league is an 8
teamer.

The first thing I notice is that in an 8 team league why are Victorino, Marquis, Looper and maybe even Cust even on a roster. In an 8 team mixed league there are only 72 players starting by your roster construction. Even when you add in your reserves there are only about 100 players off the board on offense. Players like that have no place in an 8 team league. I would suggest getting some other players and making a deal that allows you to get as many stud players as you can. This is a good deal in terms of a 12 team league, but I think there are probably players out there on the wire that could replace Suppan and Marquis. I wouldn’t do this deal, although I do agree that getting Wells into the lineup is the first thing I would do.

I agree with Zach. Accepting this deal is crucial, because Marquis and Suppan are overachieving. You have other overachievers (Looper for example), but a deal is there that you can make them available. My only question is that do you have to take Adiran Gonzalez in this deal? Gonzalez as good as he is hitting, also hits in a really really bad ballpark, especially for lefties. The loss between Crawford and Gonzalez is moderate, and if you can find someone to bridge the gap slightly, it would seem better.

Get Vernon Wells in your line-up. As mtn said, in a 8-team league, guys like Victorino and Cust (espeically) really don’t belong. If you can deal them off to get someone valuable, or find some value off the wire. Unless Victorino can get you 20-20, in my opinion, he’s very fringy.
