Marlins Make Deal (Not Manny)



MIAMI – The Florida Marlins today announced they have acquired left-handed pitcher Arthur Rhodes from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Gaby Hernandez. The announcement was made by Marlins’ President of Baseball Operations, Larry Beinfest.


Rhodes, 38, has a Major League career record of 77-61, 4.28 in 689 games, 61 starts, including a 2-1, 2.86 mark in 2008. He has held left-handed hitters to a .195 (8×41) average and has not surrendered a home run in 75 at bats overall this season. Rhodes has appeared in the post-season four times, including owning a 1.04 ERA in nine Division Series games, allowing one earned run in 8.2 innings. In his career, he has played with Baltimore (1991-1999), Seattle (2000-03; 2008), Oakland (2004), Cleveland (2005) and Philadelphia (2006).


Hernandez, 21, went a combined 5-8 with a 6.47 ERA (87.2 IP/63 ER) in 17 starts between Albuquerque (AAA) and Carolina (AA).  He was acquired by the Marlins December 9, 2005, with outfielder Dante Brinkley in a deal that sent catcher Paul Lo Duca to the New York Mets.
