Another Mock Draft
I don’t know about you, but with the fantasy football season winding down (my team was just eliminated from the playoffs), I’m beginning to get that baseball itch. For those feeling the same way, here’s a mock draft from last night in which Cushing was a participant. As you’ll notice, there are plenty of surprises. Tell us what you think.

Podcasts + Upcoming Show Sked
In case you missed it, the guys did an hour long show from Vegas on Tuesday. The audio and video podcasts for this one are available on the site. In addition, you can also get an audio podcast of a couple of short segments from Wednesday…one analyzing the Sabathia and K-Rod signings and the other discussing the Mariners-Mets-Indians three team deal. Here’s how the 411 schedule looks for the next couple of weeks:
Today – no show
Tuesday 12/16 and Thursday 12/18 – McCarthy and Schwartz
Tuesday 12/23 – Hosts TBD (final show of 2008)

Hey again guys,
I am in a 10 team keeper league, points h2h. We keep 8 players with a requirement of keeping 2 pitchers. I have to keep 2 of the following pitchers: Chad Billingsley, Joba Chamberlain or Brad Lidge. Who do I keep?
Tzvi in Israel
Hey Tzvi,
Go with Lidge and Billingsley. Lidge is an obvious choice, as one could easily make the case that he was the top fantasy closer in 2008. You can’t do much better than 41 for 41. And that’s not including the playoffs! On the surface, the choice between Billingsley and Joba seems like a tough one, but it really isn’t. While both have bright futures ahead of them, Billingsley’s clearly a starter, and probably a top 15 one heading into ’09. The Yankees are insisting that Chamberlain will start, but considering their free agent starter blitz, a move back to the bullpen might make more sense. As a middle reliever, Joba has minimal fantasy value, and even if he winds up in the rotation, he has considerably less experience than Billingsley when it comes to pitching every fifth day. I understand it’s tempting to keep Joba due to his huge long-term potential, but don’t for a second think that the 24 year-old Billingsley has already reached his ceiling.
Hi guys.
I am keeping 5 bats and will therefore be picking my first pitcher in the 6th round. Would you rather take a Closer first like Soria, K-Rod or Mo, or take the best SP like Lackey or Haren and fill up on Closers later?
Cheers.
Kevin in England
Hey Kevin,
I’d definitely take a starter and closer with the first two picks but the order really depends on where you’re drafting and who’s still on the board. All things equal, I’ll lean towards the closer. If you can get a K-Rod or Mo, take them over a Lackey or Haren. Owning an elite closer is invaluable, and they’re generally less injury prone and more consistent from year to year than even a top tier starter. That doesn’t mean you should wait several rounds to get your ace, but a K-Rod/Dice-K duo sure beats a Valverde/Haren one. And who knows? It’s quite possible that you’ll wind up with both K-Rod/Mariano/Soria and Haren/Lackey. The key is to be flexible.

Hey Jeff,
A good way to look at this is to think about who would classify as a top five round selection. Assuming this is a 12 teamer, that would translate to a top 60 pick. Roberts certainly fits this description. Roberts is as consistent as they come at the second base position, providing around a .290 average, 40 or so steals, 100+ runs, and double digit homers. He’s no worse than a late fourth rounder, and will likely be drafted even before then. Adrian Gonzalez is another guy you should hold onto. There’s a slight chance he’ll last into the sixth round, but don’t take that risk! Once again, the key is consistency. Adrian’s averaged 33 homers, 110 RBIs, and 102 runs scored over the last two seasons while playing half his games at Petco. Pretty impressive.
Beyond the Wright-Roberts-Gonzalez trio, I’d stay put and take those extra draft picks. Keeping V-Mart is tempting, but chances are he will still be on the board by the time you make your first regularly scheduled pick. The fact that Martinez returned from elbow surgery to hit .288 with a .475 slugging percentage in the month of September bodes well for his ’09 outlook, especially if he’s available at a discount. Considering V-Mart at that spot could pay big dividends.
It’s great to have you guys back for the winter – Dustin Pedroia was taken 14th overall in your mock draft, and I was surprised that nobody’s talked about him and whether that’s where his value lies for next season. Could you guys elaborate a little bit on where Pedroia fits in the early rounds and among other second basemen?
Thanks, as always!
Adam in St. Louis
Hey Adam,
No way is Pedroia anywhere close to the 14th best player in fantasy baseball. This is yet another example of fans overvaluing players on their favorite teams. And the number of Red Sox fans is constantly growing! Take advantage of that. There’s no question Pedroia’s across the board numbers can help any fantasy club, but he doesn’t have a track record of dominance in multiple categories, a prerequisite for any first or second rounder. Looking at that mock draft, I’d much rather have Beltran, Upton, Ichiro, Carlos Lee, Berkman, Holliday, Morneau, or even Brandon Phillips and Brian Roberts. All in all, I view Pedroia as more of a fourth round player, and would rank him fifth among second basemen, after Utley, Kinsler, Phillips, and Roberts.

Renteria to Giants
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Looking to add strength to both the middle of the infield and to the top of the lineup, the San Francisco Giants have signed free agent infielder Edgar Renteria to a two-year contract, club Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Sabean announced today.
Per club policy, financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Renteria, 33, is a career .290 hitter in 13 big league seasons with Florida (1996-98), St. Louis (1999-2004), Boston (2005), Atlanta (2006-07) and Detroit (2008). The 6-foot-1, 200-pound native of Colombia is a five-time National League All-Star selection (1998, 2000, 2003-04, 2006), two-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner (2002-03) and three-time Silver Slugger Award winner (2000, 2002-03).
“We’re extremely excited to bring a player of Edgar’s caliber to our organization,” said Sabean. “He is a complete player on both sides of the ball, a clutch performer and a winner. He has the hardware to show it with the awards he has garnered and a World Series ring. We look forward to seeing him in a Giants uniform.”
Renteria spent all of last season with the Detroit Tigers, batting .270 with 69 runs, 22 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs and 55 RBI in 138 games. He led the American League with a .366 batting average against left-handed pitchers and posted a .296 average in 56 games following the All-Star Break. He also reached the 2,000 hit milestone last season, achieving the feat June 17 at San Francisco and becoming just one of 20 active Major League players to amass 2,000 or more hits in his career.
A career .293 hitter in the National League, Renteria ranked fourth in the NL in 2007 with a career-best .332 batting average in his second season with the Braves. He compiled one of his finest seasons in 2003 with St. Louis, posting career highs in games (157), hits (194), doubles (47), RBI (100), on-base pct. (.394) and slugging pct. (.480). He has fared extremely well at AT&T Park, compiling a career .344 average (32-for-93) in 23 contests.
Originally signed by Florida as a non-drafted free agent in 1992, Renteria brings a resume of winning baseball to San Francisco, making six trips to the postseason with Florida, St. Louis and Boston. A veteran of 55 career playoff contests, Renteria owns a .246 lifetime postseason average with one homer and 17 RBI while playing in six Division Series (1997, 2000-02, 2004-05), four Championship Series (1997, 2000, 2002, 2004) and a pair of World Series (1997, 2004). One of his most memorable performances was his game-winning hit off Charles Nagy in Game 7 of Florida’s 1997 World Series victory over Cleveland.
Throughout his career, he has been frequently named by Baseball America as one of the best defensive shortstops and one of the best hit and run artists in baseball. He is a lifetime .299 hitter with runners in scoring position, including a .302 mark in 2008.
Vazquez Trade Official
Braves Acquire Pitchers Javier Vazquez and Boone Logan From White Sox
Atlanta sends four prospects to Chicago
ATLANTA – The Atlanta Braves and Chicago White Sox announced today that the two clubs have completed a six-player trade. The Braves acquired right-handed starting pitcher Javier Vazquez and left-handed relief pitcher Boone Logan from the White Sox in exchange for catcher Tyler Flowers, infielder Brent Lillibridge, minor-league infielder Jon Gilmore and minor-league pitcher Santos Rodriguez.
Vazquez, 32, is under contract through the 2010 season. He owns a career record of 127-129 with a 4.32 ERA in 11 major league seasons and ranks ninth among all active pitchers in strikeouts (2,015), 14th in innings pitched (2,270.2) and 15th in games started (353). His career strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.34 ranks sixth among all active pitchers (minimum 2,000 innings pitched).
Vazquez is the only major league pitcher to post at least 10 wins, 30 starts and 150 strikeouts in each of the last nine seasons. In 2007 he notched a 15-8 record with a 3.73 ERA and 213 strikeouts in 216.2 innings pitched. Last season he went 12-16 with a 4.67 ERA and 200 strikeouts in 208.1 innings of work.
Vazquez has pitched at least 200 innings in eight of the last nine seasons (he had 198 IP in 2004) and has recorded 200 or more strikeouts four times in his career, including each of the last two campaigns. He has also finished in his league’s top 10 in strikeouts in eight of the last nine seasons, including ranking fourth in the American League in each of the last three years (2006-08).
Originally selected by the Montreal Expos in the fifth round of the 1993 draft, Vazquez has pitched for four different clubs: Montreal (1998-2003), New York Yankees (2004), Arizona Diamondbacks (2005) and Chicago (2006-08).
Logan, 24, has appeared in 144 career games (all in relief) in three seasons. The 6-foot-5 lefthander was selected in the 20th round of the 2002 draft and made his major league debut in 2006. Logan appeared in 55 games for the Sox in 2008, going 2-3 with a 5.95 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 42.1 innings pitched.
