Chris Young (SD) in the 18th is an absolute steal? Why did he drop so low? His ADP has to be 14th round or so.
-Dan in LA
I’m a little surprised to see that Rick Ankeil has not yet been taken. If healthy, can’t he put up numbers similar to what we can expect from Carlos Pena?
Charlie Saponara
Dan and Charlie, I agree with you both.
Re. Young, the concern with him is that his K/BB and BB/9 rates have both consistently gone in the wrong direction for three straight years, and even when healthy from 2005-07 he wasn’t exactly a workhorse, never topping 200 IP. However, his K/9 rates remain strong and PETCO is a perfect place for his extreme fly-ball pitching style, so I’m happy to take that gamble this late in the draft.
Re. Ankiel, I’m a big fan and think he has 30-35 homer power, although some might be turned off by the potential playing time crunch in the St. Louis OF with the emergence last year of Ludwick, the arrival of Rasmus this year and the return of Chris Duncan. Still, he should be gone by now and I’m surprised he’s not; I’d take him but I drafted OF much earlier so I’m full up now!
–Cory
I’m with you Charlie, I don’t know if he’d put up Pena numbers but I think .260 30 hr, 100 rbi is what he would’ve reached if he had played a full season last year.
I just took over as commish in a H2H league that has 9 batting stats and 9 pitching stats. They are as follows
Bat: R, H, HR, RBI, SB, BB, K, E, AVG
Pitch: IP, W, L, SV, BB, K, HLD, ERA, WHIP
I’d like to change IP for something else in order to reduce the temptation to stream pitchers and cut down on transactions.
I was thinking about blown saves but I’m catching some flack from one team. He suggested Quality starts or HR allowed. I’m leaning toward QS since it might also help to curb streaming also.
In addition, since this is a 10 team league I increased the roster size from 20 spots to 22, hoping this may decrease the talent pool on the wire. However, now that I think about it some more, it might just give teams a couple more players that they don’t mind cutting and therefore, increase the use of the wire. I know that I could just limit transaction but I don’t want to ruffle any more feathers. Plus I could try and charge per transaction but collecting cash is a burden in this league.
What do you experts think, and do you have any other suggestions?
In all of your experience what is the average number of transactions that seems reasonable in a season?
Thanks, you guys are great
PD
BTW I’m still interested in the listeners league if and when spots may become available!
I hope that this doesn’t double post but I hit submit and it didn’t show up, so I,m going to try it again!

So, when can we expect to see the 411 crew on the MLB Network? (As great as Top 9 and Cathedrals of the Game are, I don’t think they need to be on every 2 hours.)
Who do we email to bring Siano and Schwartz into our living rooms?
-Eric, Cincy
Hi guys,
Just looking for 1B who can be had after round 10. Assuming that guys like Votto are gone then where should I look for solid corner guys who won’t kill the batting average. I like LaRoche, but am more inclined to trade for him mid season and let someone else take that slow start.
Similar question. If I miss out on the second tier of SS’s (Jeter-Peralta etc) then who is your favourite guy to take after round 10 (Aviles is off the table)
Eric, I would never tell you who to bug to see us on MLBN, and I’m sure they have bigger things to worry about. But thanks for the props!
Kevin, I very much like LaRoche as a late-round option and wouldn’t worry about the slow start tendencies… he’s 29 years old and in a contract year, so I think he’s primed for a career year. Konerko is a decent bounceback candidate and could be had late cheap, and Giambi should give you 30 HR for a late-round pick if you can absorb that AVG. Kendry Morales might be around late and should hit .280 with ~20 homers, and don’t give up on Billy Butler… if he can start to hit lefties he might be another Mike Sweeney.
As far as SS, Ryan Theriot seems to be going very late for a guy who can hit .300 with 30+ SB’s. Clint Barmes and Felipe Lopez could give decent power/speed combos thanks to their home ballparks, although both have to definitely win starting jobs this spring.
Thanks,
Cory
Cory, I like the Roberts over Phillips pick. People are expecting another 30/30 season from him with a .280 BA. I don’t think that ever happens again.
Far be it from me to question the great Will Carroll (especially having such a great Irish name) but Maybin in the 9th?! Also thought Kendrick went too early. He may hit .300 but doesn’t steal enough or hit for power at all.
Good middle round value- Hunter in the 13th, Dye in the 14th, and Danks in the 15th. Agree with very good value with C. Young in the 18th.
Definitely not shocked by: Collette drafting N. Cruz and Cincotta drafting K. Matsui.
Thanks for posting this Cory. Represent Tony!!!
