Fantasy 411 Q&A: March 27, 2009

Wanted to let everyone know that Cory and I will be on the MLB Network March 29th from 8:30 to 10:00pm ET.
The network has decided to do a season preview show and invited us to
be featured. We are honored, excited and can’t say enough about the
producers (Jim, Martin and Micah) that have been assigned to the show.
Obviously we all hope it is the first step in getting a presence, but
one thing at a time. Please spread the word and invite your friends to
watch the show this Sunday night.

FEATURED QUESTION OF THE DAY

10 team 6×6 (OPS and Holds), 4th pick. Rapid fire:
Would you guys look at Arod early 3rd?
Would you grab Utley late second and run?

Thanks again for everything,

Chris in Columbus

I’m leery of A-Rod… we still don’t know when he’ll be back and
whether or not he’ll run when he returns, which is a big part of his
value. Early 3rd is awfully risky in a shallow league. I would
DEFINITELY take Utley with that late 2nd pick though… we know he’ll
be back right around opening day, and 2B is not nearly as deep as 3B. Good luck!

So heading into my last weekend of drafting and I am looking for that little edge over everyone else, so I thought I would look into Jon Dewan’s +.200 ST OPS indicator. I want to get your opinion on which of these guys are going to live up to the numbers.

Morales +.246
Khalil Greene +.259
Konerko +.259
Jacobs +.296
Sandoval +.297
Crisp +.371
Hardy +.527
Hart +.508
Billy Butler +.325
Ryan Sweeney +.326

I used 50 spring training AB as my cut off point. I know this is usually used for younger players so that may rule out Konerko and Greene, but just wanted your opinion.

–Nate in Springfield

I need some advise on my 2B players. Right now I have a platoon of Kazou Matsui and Orlando Huson for my 2B spot. Available on the waiver wire are players like Rickie Weeks, Alexei Casilla, Freddy Sanchez, Mike Fontenot, Skip Schumaker. Aaron Hill, Akinori Iwamure and Clint Barmes.

What do you guys think? Should I drop one of of the 2 (or both)and replace them by someone on the waiver wire? Just let me know!

- Jeremy

Guys, I caught up with all the unanswered questions from yesterday, including Jeremy’s. So go over to yesterday’s post to check those out.

Zach

Hey Zach,
1st-WOOHOO question of the day!

10 team 6×6(OPS and Holds). (keepers are guys drafted after 10th round)Drafted yesterday and need a unbiased opinion of where i should go from here.

C- McCan
1st-Fielder
2nd-Kelly Johnson
SS- Reyes
3rd- Encarnacion
OF-Beltran
OF- Hart
OF-Kemp (keeper from last season)
OF-Pence
UTIL- Dye
B-Weiters
B-Delmon Young

SP-Haren
SP-Vasquez
SP-Kershaw
SP-Kuo (holds?)
RP-Lidge (keeper from last season)
RP- Broxton
RP-Capps
P-Putz
P-Madson (lidge insurance?)
B- Masterson (SP eligible holds?)
B- Corpas
B-Parra
B- Wandy Rodruigez

I know i have a glut of OF, but should i be worried about 2nd and 3rd and take a deal for a lesser 3rd or 2nd for one of my OF?
Thanks for your opinion!

So who do you see getting more time at 3b in Phily? Dobbs and his close to .300 average or Feliz with his power upside which has seemed to disappear…

Also if you could give your opinion on those players in my OPS post that would be great

Nate in Springfield

Nate, don’t really understand what those numbers refer to. Could you clarify?
I think Feliz begins the year as the starter and probably gets more ABs by year’s end but he’ll be on a short leash. I sure hope he does rebound for the sake of my NL-Only team!

Zach

cpowell, stick with what you’ve got. Having a bunch of good OFs isn’t a bad thing, and it’s not like you have so many that you’re having to bench a top end guy. I’m also a big fan of Kelly Johnson and I think EE takes a step forward this year.

Zach

thanks zach

I think sometime in the late 90′s early 2000′s Jon Dewan used Spring Training OPS as an indicator for a breakout season. He said that Spring Training OPSes that were 200 points higher than a career OPS strongly suggested the hitter would have a break out year. The numbers are that players 2009 Spring Training OPS difference compared to their Career OPS. Just wondering who you think really will have a good year using this indicator.

Ah OK, the ST thing must’ve thrown me off! I think Hardy can roughly be expected to do what he did last year. He’s a pretty safe choice as a top 8-10 SS. Hart’s power/speed combo is obviously very valuable, and I do think he can up that average to the .280 level. Of the other names there, I really like Morales’ potential now that he’ll receive everyday ABs at 1B and Crisp is a nice late round source of SBs who won’t kill your AVG. I’m not buying into Greene, as it’s looking like 2007 was the exception rather than the norm. I expect him to roughly repeat his ’05 line of .250-15-70.

Zach

Will the preview show be on demand after Sunday? Kudos!

Hey folks, a few quick replies…

* Nate, the John Dewan 200+ SLG improvement has been shown to indicate regular season improvement, but not consistently. So in the absence of a strong pattern, we go back to our typical evaluation methods, particularly career path. Thus, I think it’s safe to assume that younger guys like Kendry, Sandoval, Hardy, Hart, Butler and Sweeney might see a nice power spike this season. But I don’t think it tells you much about Konerko, Jacobs or Crisp. Greene is an interesting case… he had 27 HR and 97 RBI a couple of years ago and has always put up much better numbers outside of PETCO. He could be a nice late-round value pick this year with the Cardinals.

* Kzellis, yes, the MLB Network show will be available on MLB.com and iTunes after it airs on Sunday, but we hope everyone will tune in live at 8:30 p.m. ET on Sunday night!

* Nate again… Feliz is back on track for opening day and is a superior defensive player to Dobbs, so he will still get the majority of the at-bats at 3B in Philly. But Dobbs is a good hitter with some versatility so he’s worth a $1 pick in NL-only leagues.

* Jeremy, I am VERY bullish this year on Fontento in particular, and I think Barmes and Casilla could provide excellent value as well. Hudson is a solid player who could benefit from batting 2nd in front of Manny, and Matsui should be good for 20-25 steals or more on the off chance he stays healthy. In other words, the guys on the waiver wire are intriguing but not necessarily better than what you have… you need to make a trade to get a true upgrade here.

Thanks,
Cory

Looking for advice on a 12 Team 5×5 roto that was an autodraft (bad weather last week and a sat. internet I decided to do an autodraft). Have 1 utility position and start 3 SP, 2RP, 2P.

My existing team:
V. Martinez – C, 1B
C. Iannetta – C
M. Teixeira – 1B
I. Kinsler – 2B
J. Reyes – SS
E. Longoria – 3B
A. Soriano – OF
C. Lee – OF
M. Kemp – OF
J. Ellsbury – OF
S. Drew – SS
J. Cantu – 1B, 3B
A. Ramirez – 2B,SS,OF
C. Davis – 1B, 3B

Pitching
F. Liriano
J. Johnson
K. Slowey
Y. Gallardo
J. Broxton
C. Marmol
J. Devine

I am trying to trade Cantu for Nolasco or Billingsley since I think I need more SP. Also thinking of just dropping Drew for pitching help, either SP or RP (efforts to trade him with Cantu for Top SP failed).

On the waiver wire: Qualls, Motte, Ziegler, Gonzalez, Bell, Francisco, Balfour, Howell, Masterson, Morrows. SP – Cueto, Kershaw, Kuroda, Volstad, Scherzer, S. Lewis, Guthrie, Zimmermann, Jimenez, Owings, or D. Price

Your thoughts? Assuming Cantu trade or no trade.

Hi Guys!!!!
With C. Lee, G. Meche, D. Lowe, CM Wang, M. Cain as my starters and Rivera, Cappy (plus Motte?!) as my relievers, i picked up Wandy Rodriguez from the wire. (12 team h2h, mixed)
I still have the feeling I could improve on SP and think about getting rid of one of my starters for Tommy Hanson, even though hes in AAA right now.

I am considering dropping Wandy R. for him-good idea?
Other possible options are OF D. Span or OF DeJesus (KC).

What would u guys recommend, wait or trying to snatch Hanson now?

Great job, keep on rockin,
Danny D, Munich, Germany

I have a question ?.
I have been offered a trade Justin Verlander and Aaron Harang for Carlos Beltran, my others OF are Carlos Lee, Alex Rios,Matt Kemp, Corey Hart, . My pitchers are Bedard,Slowey, Josh Johnson,Baker and Kershaw.Should I accept this trade ?.

thanks
