Fantasy 411 Q&A: April 6, 2009

FEATURED QUESTION OF THE DAY

What do you guys think of Chris Carpenter this year? He’s a free agent in my
10 team head-to-head keeper league. I’ve
got one open bench slot (out of three) since I just put B.J. Upton on
the disabled list. My league charges transaction fees throughout the
season ($.50 per add/drop/player traded) so there isn’t any pitch or
ditch during the season. Is Carpenter worth a rental while Upton is on
the disabled list? Is Carpenter worth holding onto after Upton gets
back?

Thanks,
Damon in Seattle

It’s worth a shot for 50 cents, but since Upton isn’t going to be out
that long it’s a waste to pick up Carp and cut him before mid-April. It
really depends on who else you are cutting to make room for Upton and
still keep Carpenter.

Happy Opening Day Everyone!

Keep an eye on Mother Nature. She has already cost us two games, one in Chicago and one in Boston.

Hope everyone saw the Pitch or Ditch posting from Friday and read Zach’s outline of how it will work. It is exclusive to the Blog and will be out a day before the games.

Also hope everyone had a chance to either listen live to the Sirius / XM show or download the podcast. We got some good feedback so we appreciate that. The show this Friday will be live from 6-8pm ET.

We will shoot the video show in about two hours. Sheff, A-Rod and the season opener will be on the docket.

12 team mixed vanilla. Trying to upgrade my rotation. I have been offered Carpenter + Werth for Weaver + T.Hunter. I see Werth and T.Hunter as being basically the same player, if anything Werth has higher upside. I have high hopes for Weaver, but the thought of a healthy Carpenter is tantalising.
What do you hear regarding Carpenter? Is he back, does he have full velocity and control, how many games will he start and will he outperform Weaver (who is far from healthy himself) to make this deal worth it? Or was it just a great Spring and should I sit tight with the Dream Weaver?

What do you guys think of Carpenter this year? He’s a free agent in my 10 team head-to-head keeper league. My current starters are Sabathia, Gallardo, and Nolasco. We count Holds and use K/9 instead of K and Net Wins instead of Wins, so I’ve got 5 closers and 2 middle relievers also (there seems to be more of an emphasis on relievers than starters, but all of the elite and very good starters are keepers every year). My league charges transaction fees throughout the season ($.50 per add/drop/player traded) so there isn’t any pitch or ditch during the season. Hey guys I’ve been changing my mind back and forth for the past week because I don’t know which pitching staff to start.

I can either start the Cubs who play @HOU 3 times and @MIL 3 times, or I can go with the Twins who play home vs SEA 4 times and @CWS 3 times.

Hey guys
Really enjoyed the Podcast from the satellite debut Friday night. Due to the guest list, it was the best mix of fantasy and real baseball analysis I’ve heard in awhile. You guys are on fire.

Hi, I am in an 8-team, H2H league on MLB.com. I received a trade offer where I give up:
Hanley Ramirez, Evan Longoria, and Matt Holliday;
and receive:
Grady Sizemore, Josh Hamilton, Kevin Youkilis, and Vernon Wells.
Should I accept this trade?

8 team AL only 5×5 vanil roto weekly

I alreay have staring
Verlander
B Anderson
A Gallarraga
T Wakefield at LAA

I need one of the 3 as my 5th or I wonder if I use 2 and not use wakefield

Litch vs Detroit
K Davies at Chicago
G Perkins vs Seattle

Hey guys,
I am having a MLB.com live draft tonight at 8 and I am picking 6th. I was wondering if this is a resonable plan for my draft:
1. Reyes/ Braun
2. Longoria
3. Kinsler/ Pedroia/ Phillips/ Kemp (or best available OF)
4. McCann/Soto
5. Rays/ Yankees (pitching staff)
6. Depends on #1 if i picked braun i’d go for shortstop (tulo) if i picked reyes i’d go for an OF
7. Votto
8. Another variable, if i picked a 2b mid 3rd i’d do an of but if i did an of i’d do a 2b (Cano/ Lopez)
9. OF
How does this look?
Thanks in advance,
The Manoman

Thanks for the response on my Carpenter question. Here’s a little more info. My bench (when Upton returns) is Sandoval, Choo, and a relief pitcher or starter depending on the day. I’m currently carrying 3 starters and 7 relievers with 9 active pitching slots. I like to rotate in a reliever on days a starter isn’t going. So I’d have to drop Sandoval, Choo, or one of my relievers (Nathan, Lidge, Motte, Francisco, Sherrill, Ray, or Kuo) to keep Carpenter. I’ve stockpiled closers in an effort to trade 1 away in a package deal for a position player upgrade. That’s worked the last two years (two years ago I landed Utley for a closer and two hitters; last year I landed B.J. Upton for a closer and Jason Bay). I think I’ll pass on Carpenter for now. Thanks, Damon in Seattle

Kevin,

It sounds like Carpenter is healthy, but we’ve heard this before. I tend to steer clear of huge injury risks, but I think doing this deal is a good gamble. I view Werth as an upgrade over Hunter as he’s yet to reach his peak while Hunter is already on the downside of his career. I also like Weaver (I have him on two teams) but all injury concerns equal, Carpenter is clearly the better pitcher. Don’t let Weaver stand in the way of this trade.

Zach

Trade question for you, please!

16-team, 5×5 H2H league. My current starting pitchers are: Billingsley, Wainwright, Garza, Jered Weaver, Arroyo & Bush, with Escobar on the DL.

Do you think I have enough starters? I have the opportunity to trade Torii Hunter for Kevin Slowey, who I think would be a great addition to my staff, as I don’t have much confidence in Arroyo or Bush. Hunter’s place in the OF would be taken by a platoon of Carlos Gomez & Fred Lewis.

Thanks! Chris in London

troundfish,

The Twins’ 4 games vs SEA are tempting, but I’m going with the Cubs. Better team, better staff (especially with Baker on DL).

Zach

9-team NL-only 5×5. I’ve been offered Ryan Braun for Milledge, Hawpe, Gallardo and Carpenter. Fred Lewis would become my fifth outfielder. I would pick up Kearns or Nick Johnson for my utility.

Should I look to recieve a starter like Matt Cain or Ted Lilly in return in addition to Braun? Would you do this deal with Cain, without Cain or not at all?

Bas in Denmark

Kevin,

I agree with zach and this could end up being a wash but the upside is the Carp/Werth side.

-Siano

babu,

In an 8 team league with this many stars it’s hard to judge a trade that doesnt wash out in roster spots. Meaning you may be getting four good players but you probably have to cut someone to make room for the 4th. Who is that player? it makes a difference. Right now I’m on the fence so that would be the deciding factor.

-Siano

mmsox

Go Perkins, not great options.

-Siano

manoman

You look close. I don’t see Reyes making it to 6th and I don’t see Kinsler making it to third round, but other then that you have legit expectations, never know but decent plan. I’d also go McCann/Martin/Soto.

-Siano

Chris in London,

I don’t mind that trade. Hunter is a good not great player and Gomez has big upside except for power so not a bad idea.

-Siano

Bas,

I’d ask for cain but settle for Lilly. You cleraly get the best player in the deal but are giving up a decent package of upside guys so another arm as comp isn’t a ridiculous ask.

-Siano

Mike,

The XM show was awesome, I’m so happy you guys are landing on your feet after getting jerked around for the past couple seasons. Also, is there any way that you would consider copy and pasting the post that you’re responding to? It would make it so much easier to read the blog and soak up the excellent fantasy advice you dispense.

Vito

Hey guys,
Thanks for all your help. Say that Reyes, Sizemore, and Braun make it to the 6th pick. Who would you choose?
Thanks,
The Manoman
http://manoman.mlblogs.com

manoman,

Go with Reyes. He dominates the steals category while playing at the thin SS position. Reyes vs Sizemore is close, but the position factor makes the difference.

Zach

I would have to drop either Cano, Werth, Sandoval, or Justin Upton.

Manoman,
Zach is not wrong suggesting Reyes but personally I go Sizemore. He brings everything to the table and I think could be there for you at 6. I’m anti Reyes. It’s great he steals so much but you only need to win by one steal not twenty.
-Siano

babu,

I don’t make this deal. Cutting Sandoval in a league like this may not be a big deal but I wouldn’t cut the other guys just yet and I never felt like you were clearly the winner on this deal as is.

-Siano

Thanks for both sides of view guys,
Another question:
I have received an offer i my 1 keeper 12×12 H2H League. I give up Braun, Kotchman, Marmol, Verlander, and Devine for Davis, Adam Jones, J.Shields, and Lidge. Right now my closer is Frank Francisco and my 1b is Kotchman. I have Rios and Hart in my 3 man OF and I can plug in Jones/Cruz for Braun. I also have Kinsler & Longoria which can be my one keeper. Should I ask for more, accept the offer, or decline it?
Thanks,
The Manoman

Manoman,

Does this person know Devine may be done for the year? Didn’t you ask this question already? You may not know this but a pet peeve of the 411 is 6 for 6 trades. They dilute what you really needed in the first place. I’m considering boycotting such questions b/c what happens is you start trading for or trading away guys about to go on the 60 day DL. What are you trying to get out of the trade?

-Siano

Vito,

It’s a fair request the only thing I don’t like about it is re copying a 12 line question and I don’t want people to leave out pertinent info when making a post. We may try to summarize the question in the answers like when you watch reality TV. Another problem is to make this uniform will take time we actually have more writers coming to join the blog so that we can answer more questions from qualified people. The function of this blog is not the best but it’s all we got right now.

As far as being jerked around, I don’t see it that way at all. What most people don’t realize is that me and Cory don’t get paid to do fantasy, our real jobs keep us plenty busy and for this company to allow us to do one or two hours a day just fantasy wouldn’t be prudent. I would have preferred the show got sponsored again but that was Viagra’s decision not MLB.com’s. It cost real money to put a show on video and while radio is easier and cheaper it also isn’t what this site is all about nit when you have games in high def with dvr features. We’re ecstatic to be back on radio but anything more then one two hour show a week Cory and I would have personally said thanks but no thanks. We appreciate everyone’s enthusiam and love everyone to death but lately we have noticed a lot of assuming and comments not based on facts so I wanted to clear it up a little and let everyone know we look forward to Friday’s show and hearing from whoever can call in.
-Siano

Manoman,

Don’t apologize keep em coming that’s what we are here for. Hey if the owner thinks that then your hands are blood free. This is a tough one. Braun is the best player in the deal but Davis and Jones are upside guys. Devine and Kotchman to me are useless with Marmol in limbo and of course Lidge trumps them both. It’s the Shields vs Verlander question. They could have similar years in a good or bad way. I’d strip this deal down. Trade Kotchman, Marmol and Devine for Lidge and another lesser player. Otherwise stand pat. Braun is a first rounder let’s not forget that.
-Siano

In the “I’m just saying department:”

In 2008 it took Cliff Lee until May 18th, 60 innings into the season before he gave up 7 ER. This year, 5 innings. Let’s hope he has some more of those 8 and 9 inning, 0 ER games in him this year.

Siano,
The other owner feels that Devine will come back and make an impact and that marmol will win back the closer role. I am trying to get a good 1b, solid of, #2 starter and closer while my opponent is desperate for of. I was just checking for confirmation.
Sorry about asking so many questions,
The Manoman

If you hate pitching you are wise.

DOH. I posted this like 4 hours ago but in the wrong section. Here goes ….

two questions.
First, how do you like better this season … Daniel Cabrera or Livan Hernandez in a 4×4 league no strikeouts?
Second, I drafted Elijah Dukes and see now that he’s backing up Kearns (and all other OF) in DC. Would you drop Dukes to pick up Kearns in a 4×4 (no Runs)?
P.S. I like the pitch or ditch moving to the blog but since I’m in a weekly transaction league it doesn’t really help. Any chance you could share thoughts on two start pitchers at the beginning of the week? I frequently evaluate dropping my weakest starter for two start SP and would love your guys’ advise.

You’re right, of course. But, you must understand the sense of ownership and protectiveness that many of your longtime listeners feel about the show. Having to stand by helplessly, while the show went from a fantastically entertaining hour to a more scripted half hour to a quick hit series of blurbs, has been tough. I’m just happy that I get a taste of the old show back, if only once a week. Congrats on the new show.

Vito

doubt you guys will be able to get to this one today, but maybe you could mention some reply tomorrow. Question: 12 team keeper in yr 3, roto 8 X 8. For my current needs I’ll only include the off stats: R, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, BB, OBP, NSB.

I’ve been desperately trying to plug a hole in LF & with depth at 1B & CF I’ve sent a ton of offers out, but having been nothing but low-ball offers & replies since everyone knows I’m desperate for a LF. I’ve had McClouth, Berkman, Atkins and Thome on the block. (I already traded Dye for Wieters which I believe is a steal for a keeper). My question is 2-part. First, as I noticed McClouth playing RF on opening day I was wondering if he or any of these other guys will get any & enough opportunities in LF to open it up as a new fantasy position: McClouth(Pit), Hamilton(Tex), N.Cruz(Tex)? also will J.Pierre get enough starts to warrant a roster spot & what’s the odds of him becoming a starter?

Secondly, who from these WW players would be the best to pickup as a starter in LF until something better comes along: D.Young, A.Lind, M.Teahan, R.Spilborghs, C.Headley (who I could also use as backup 3B), Hairston Jr, D.Dejesus??? I’m leaning towards Spilborghs or Headley.

thanks
shannon

please include G.Anderson (Atl) in list of WW LF’s from the previous question.

shannon

Hey Guys,

Nice Job on Sirius/XM radio—great to have that “radio” format back! Friday just became an EVEN better day!

In my 12 tm mixed non-keeper, Adam Lind was just dropped. I have David Murphy & D. DeJesus as my 5th/Bench OFs. Would you drop either David Murphy or DeJesus for Lind? Thanks.
Neighbor Steve

Neighbor Steve,
Great to be back. Are we over thinking our 5th OF? ;-) I like all three but would lean towards Murphy at home unless this platoon rumor starts to get more constant. I wouldn’t be surprised if Lind becomes the guy but in a non keeper it’s best to not get too attached to a 5th OF you may have to cut for POD.
-Siano

Shannon,

I like Spilborghs (homered today) and DeJesus, basically one gamble pick and one safe pick. if you could pick up both and stash one great but with the Rox home ride Spilborghs. There are enough guys out there you can play with it a little and see what develops. Lind is also someone to keep an eye on for sure. Decent depth here so you should be ok. Don’t panic. If McCutchen gets called up and he will eventually I could see McClouth maybe moving to left. Cruz prob not since they have Byrd and Murphy. Hamilton I’m not sure.
-Siano

Perminator,
Prob Cabrera for a little while and see what happens. he has better stuff. Mind you both could be horrendous so be realistic. That’s fine on Kearns. That could just as easy go back to Dukes but you want the guy in the lineup. To be honest I love using ESPN’s two start forecaster. If there is a product out there that works and is easy I will plug it and I won the contest on the show last year vs. Stern and Schwartz using it.
-Siano

Hey guys,
Just wanted to let you know that you have been my fantasy lifeline for today and I really appreciate that.
2 questions:
1. I just finished my mlb.com draft and ended up with a team that included Matt Holiday and Johnny Damon as 2 of my of’ers. The other players who are eligible are Braun, Alexei Ramirez, Adam Jones, Rick Ankiel, and Lastngs Milledge. I was thinking about trading Holliday and Damon for Bruce and Bay. Would you do it?
2. When you propose a trade on mlb.com does your e-mail show up even if you put it as private?
Thanks for everything,
The Manoman
http://manoman.mlblogs.com

Guys,

When looking at stats projections for AL only leagues what category goals should you be trying to reach? I’m sure it is different than mixed league play. I’m in a 12 team auction league, 23 man rosters, 6 bench, Weekly lineups. Also, what’s the best strategy for my $100 in FAAB? Never used it before.

Thanks for your help.

Mike in CT

Mike in CT, since I’m the one who asked you to post this here, I want to give you the courtesy of saying, I’m punting this to Siano. :-) He’s the AL-only guy and I’m the NL-only guy!

* * *

Manoman, do NOT do that trade. Holliday is hands-down the best OF among those four, and if Damon can put off his decline for another year, he won’t be worth significantly less than Bruce or Bay. You have the best of the bunch, sit tight.

* * *

NS, I answered on the PoD thread… I’d take Lind over Murphy even before today.

* * *

Shannon, those are all decent options. I’m a big Spilborghs fan but he will give up a few AB’s to Fowler here and there, whereas DeJesus in particular will play every single day. Teahen has a chance to earn a lot of value as a 1B/2B/3B/OF super utility, and is batting 3rd to open the season, but his track record says that won’t last. Lind has great power potential (as we saw today) but might only hit .260 and lose some PT to Millar if he slumps much.

Given the depth of the options, ride the hot hand… if I had to pick one I’d probably go with Spilborghs, but if you want Lind or Teahen I don’t mind that either.

–Cory
