NFBC post-Memorial Day update
Hey folks, it’s been a while since I’ve posted but I wanted to provide an NFBC update since we’re past the quarter pole and Memorial Day, and nearly at
the one-third mark of the season, the point where teams start to get a feel for whether or not they have a shot to win this year. My draft recap was the subject of some pretty pointed debates, too, so I think it’s a worthy topic to revisit. Plus I just like writing about my own teams!
s of this morning I’m in third place in my league, with
109.0 points and only 3.0 points out of first. (Checking the live standings tonight, I’ve closed to only 2.0 points out of first.) I’m up to 41st in the country
out of 390 teams, ahead of folks including NFBC “big names” like Eddie Gillis
and Mark “Gordon Gekko” Srebo, three-time champions Shawn Childs and Stephen
Jupinka, Jeff Erickson (RotoWire), Brian Walton (Creative Sports and Tout
Wars), and 2009 overall champ Terrence Jurney.
The success of my team so far may surprise those who trashed my
draft in the comments on my post-draft blog post back in March, but I’m not
here to brag, it’s too early for that. Obviously there is a long way to go, and to be fair, some of the criticisms
made about some of my picks have been pretty accurate so far. But rather than re-hash that, below
is a look back and how my picks are doing so far and what I expect from them
going forward.
The first row of stats for each player are his 2009
projections that I used on draft day, and the second row is his “on pace” stats
through May 27. This is not to say that I expect each guy to produce these
exact numbers all season, but is intended to provide a context for how the
player is doing so far compared to my expectations.
Enjoy, and post your comments!
Thanks,
Cory

Now, you may or may not know that there is no trading allowed
in NFBC, so the only way to improve your team is through the free agent market.
Each team starts with $1,000 and bids are done on a weekly basis. Here are my

players):

nice schwartz. glad to hear that your fantasy team is doing well. love the wandy pick. do you think bj will turn it around? i bought low on him this year hoping he will…
i have a few closer-related questions re: my own team.
1) someone just dropped magglio so i put a waiver in for him. but i can’t decide which “semi-closer” to drop: ziegs or grabow? who do you think will get more chances? does bailey have the job set in stone?
2) similarly, is wheeler now the #1 choice in tb? izzy’s not been showing up.
thanks guys,
moose
Considering you’ve given two of your first three picks a ‘D’, you’ve got to be happy about being so close to the top right now! If Upton & Martin can turn things around…
Surprised to see you got tired of waiting for Escobar – yes he had a setback, but it would have been a bonus for him to be back in May – I certainly drafted him hoping/expecting a June return – anything earlier would have been great, but not make-or-break. Hope you don’t live to regret it (actually I do, because I need him to produce in my team!)
But it looks like you’ve had some really solid Free Agent pickups – I especially like Bailey, who I think is looking more and more like the A’s closer every day. There may not be an official announcement, but I think it’s him in all but name.
Best of luck for the rest of the year!

Cory hopes to jump on later today so hang in there…Siano
