This other manager and I are in a bit of a dilemma. He wants Mauer and I’m willing to make a deal, but he keeps offering me Soto, Victorino, and Cameron for him. My OFs are Beltran, Ichiro, J. Upton, and Lind with Fowler on the bench and my other catcher, Russell Martin, is in the 3B slot, so it’s clear that this deal would be a serious downgrade. I’m hoping to get a quality 3B for Mauer and move Martin to C and this owner has Wright. From the other guy’s viewpoint, is Wright for Mauer a legit trade? I think so but he hasn’t budged. Should I sweeten the deal with another player? I already tried adding Capps because 1 of his closers is Lidge and he’s been awful. What other player from this list would get his attention? Fowler, Myers, Maine, Pettitte, D Lee.
Also, I’m hearing talks about Myers getting season ending surgery. Should I trade him away then in the previous deal before he realizes or should I try and pick up another starter? Here are some guys that are still available: Arroyo, Jason Marquis, Porcello, Pineiro, Palmer, Pavano. Thanks for the help.
Glenn–NY
PS. Loshe was just dropped if you want to add him to the list of SPs.
I’m in an AL-Only Roto league, very deep. Waiver claims are due today and only for players on active MLB rosters. I need someone to take Sonnanstine’s spot in my pitching roster. Who do you go after: David Hernandez, Jason Vargas, Scott Feldman, Jeremy Sowers? Sowers has burned me before. I know all four are a reach for mixed leagues, but they are the best available in a league like this.
Thanks,
Brian
Hey Glenn,
Yeah, you’d have to sweeten a Mauer-for-Wright proposal. As great as the catcher has been in May (.414 AVG, 1.338 OPS, 11 HR, 32 RBI), there’s no way he maintains this pace. We all know that. Your trade partner probably understands that.
Not sure if he needs more speed since he already has Victorino and Cameron, but Fowler could be a starting point. I might even go with Porcello instead; so that’s a very young and a very promising arm to pair with a catcher in his prime. I think Mauer/Capps/Porcello is a trade I would do for Wright — especially if I already had Martin to fill my catching position.

Hey Brian,
Sorry if this is too late, but perhaps it can help another reader. I’d go with Feldman. He’s 4-0, but more importantly he has a 1.18 WHIP. And he’s allowed only five homers in 48 1/3 innings despite making six starts at his homer-friendly home ballpark — Rangers Ballpark in Arlington — and starts at other long ball-friendly venues like Rogers Centre, Camden Yards and Minute Maid Park.
