Pitch or Ditch for Tuesday, May 11

Pitch
or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and their
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next guy. The concept
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive starters,
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent wire
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of “PoD”
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens last
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

I have been carrying Jose Lopez all year now using him at the 2b/3b. Can we expect him to return to form and get some production out of him or should I drop him and pick up Orlando Hudson, Alberto Callaspo or Chase Headley?

2 questions.

1) if tulo ends up being out for an extended period, who is best in his absence? o. cabrera, j. uribe, e. aybar, a. ramirez

2) scherzer is killing me right now. still recommend to stick with him and keep him & not start him until he turns it around. other options are braden, harden, marcum, c. bucholz, matusz

Question,
I have Jay Bruce, Shin-Soo Choo, Justin Upton, Matt Kemp, and Bobby Abreu. Standard yahoo league (3 OF, 1 Util) what should i do with these guys?

What do I do with C. Jones? 12 team Dynasty league. Best options available are T. Glaus, K. Kouzmanoff and J. Bautista. Do I drop him or just bench him and hold on for now? Thanks.

jimno,

While I think that picking up Headley for insurance might be a good idea, I’m not giving up on Lopez yet. Note that entering June 1 last season, he was batting just .230 with five homers and 26 RBIs so slow starts are nothing new for him. Benching Lopez is fine, but don’t drop him. In the long run, he’s still your best option.

boomtho,

Long term I like O-Cab as the most appealing across the board option. He won’t excel in any one area but he also won’t hurt you. Solid AVG, some pop and decent speed. As for Scherzer, my first choice, if possible, would be to keep him and pick up one of those available pitchers, Harden being my pick at the moment. But if you have to drop Scherzer to make room, I won’t stand in your way. Scherzer’s control has been way off recently and his next start (vs. BOS) is not a favorable one. Considering the quality of arms on your waiver wire, make the move if you have to.

sportsnut,

For now, Bruce is the odd man out as he has yet to hit consistently and doesn’t hold the track record of the also struggling Abreu. Kemp, Upton and Choo are all must-starts so no need to even talk about those guys.

ramdes,

Bench and hold on for now. I’m not all that optimistic about any of those other 3B options.

Do I trade Albert Pujols for Hanley Ramirez and Justin Smoak it’s a head to head keeper league please help

I was offered Derrek Lee for Ty Wigginton…. Ty is hot at the moment, do i take it?

Hey guys,
what do I do with Adam Jones? He’s killing me..I heard there might be a lineup shakeup, is that going to affect Jones? Is it time to drop or bench him in a 12 team mixed league?
Thanks
Josh

Guys… I’ve got Nelson Cruz coming off the DL and was wondering who I should cut… Brett Gardner or Denard Span or Ian Stewart. Also, which two pitchers do you prefer for balance of year… Billingsley, Wandy, J. Sanchez, or Javier Vazquez. Lastly… which DL stashee do you like more between Bedard, De La Rosa, & Haap. Thanks for the help!

One more question,
I want to pick up a CF to help my team now. I’m planning on dropping R. Davis to pick up someone…
Options are:
K. Fukadome
F. Gutierrez
A. Rowand
J. Pierre
R. Sweeney

thank you,
Josh

I have lost my patience with Scherzer and Pineiro and I’m looking to replace them. The questionable status of Bobby Jenks as a closer also troubles me. How would you rank the following SP and RP?

SP: Braden, Fister, Vargas, Niemann, Wade Davis, Medlen, Scherzer and Pineiro.

RP: Brian Wilson, Trevor Hoffman, Bobby Jenks, Thorton, Clippard, League, Moylan. (Bear in mind that I would be willing to put a non-closer like Clippard in one of my two RP spots. I’m willing to sacrifice saves to get quality numbers in ERA, WHIP, and K/BB on a consistent basis. Not sure if I would put him in one of the other 5 SP/P spots and miss out on wins though.)

Glenn–NY

Great show and great information thank you!
My question is my pitching staff…should I hold on to all of these, or drop a couple, prehaps even play a little Pitch n Ditch with a spot or two…thanks for your advice.

Nolasco – SP’s
E. Santana
Halladay
C. Lee
Kazmir
Lackey
Valverde – RP’s
Broxton
Rausch
Rodney
Wagner

Hi Guys,

Trade question for you. I need a decent Starter, and have a surplus of Closers (Wagner, Valverde, Dotel and Capps). Would you move Capps for someone like Carpenter? I avoided Carp because of the injury risk, but he’s off to a good start again, so am pondering moving for him.

Grateful for your thoughts.

Cheers,

Steve in the UK

Considering the performance of all three of my fantasy teams (I’m yet to post a week of .300+ AVG in any league), is it possible Junior is just the first player to “get caught” sleeping during games? I could make an argument for Grady Sizemore and Aramis Ramirez in the All-Ambien League.

shaddy,

Yeah, in a keeper I’d do that. Smoak is a big enough prospect to offset the small downgrade from the #1 overall player in fantasy to the #2 guy. One could even make the argument that Hanley is the more valuable player when we take into account position scarcity.
*********************************************************
roxytopps,

I’d take that trade in a second. Despite the hot start, Wigginton’s proven to be a fringe mixed leaguer over the years while Lee remains a high-end 1B option. I’ll go with the certainty of Lee over the streaky Wigginton.
********************************************************
Josh,

I too have just about lost patience with Jones and his 29/4 K/BB rate. He should certainly be benched but in a 12 teamer I wouldn’t drop him just yet. Don’t worry about a loss of playing time. I can’t see the floundering Orioles removing Jones, who figures to be a big part of their future, from the everyday lineup.

As for your other question, if you’re desperate for speed Pierre is your guy but overall I like Gutierrez as the most complete player of that bunch. He’d be my choice.
***************************************************
itaintsoto,

I couldn’t bring myself to drop Span (still loads of upside) or Gardner (SB machine and playing fairly regularly now), so I’ll go with Stewart. The fact that you’re getting back Cruz makes up for the loss of Stewart’s power. As for the pitchers, I’ll rank them Sanchez, Wandy (assuming he’s not hiding an injury), Billingsley, Vazquez. Billingsley’s a little too erratic and I’m very concerned about Vazquez right now. He looks to be all out of whack both mechanically and mentally. Lastly, I like Bedard as the best DL stashee. Unlike De La Rosa and Happ, Erik’s already put together multiple ace-caliber seasons. Health, not effectiveness, has always been his major obstacle. His rehab is reportedly going very well and the Mariners are cautiously optimistic that he can return to the rotation by around June 1.

Zach

Glenn,

For the SPs I’ll rank them Wade Davis, Niemann, Scherzer, Braden, Pineiro, Fister, Vargas, Medlen.

RPs (taking into account both Saves and ERA/WHIP along with track record): Wilson, Clippard, Thornton, Moylan, Hoffman, Jenks, League.
*****************************************************
Matt,

Kazmir’s the one guy I’d drop. He’s shown absolutely zero consistency since the 2008 season and is off to an awful start this year. I’ve got no problem with you dumping him and using that roster slot for POD.
*******************************************************
Steve,

Capps for Carpenter? You have to be kidding. Your league mate would actually agree to that deal? That’s an absolute steal. Good luck even convincing the rest of the league that the trade should not be vetoed! I’ve always liked Capps but he is a nice sell high guy right now considering his unusually high save total (remember, he plays for the Nationals!) This is an extreme example of how far some owners will go to acquire saves.
*****************************************************
csupp,

Hey, maybe Griffey was dreaming it was 1997 again – .304 AVG 56 HR 147 RBI 125 R 15 SB. Now that was some fantasy year!

Zach

16 team keeper league, 4 offensive categories: runs, rbi, obp, total bases. Who would you prefer long term Andrew McCutchen or Travis Snider? Thanks.

I’m in leagues where moves don’t happen for 2 days (make the move Monday, have the player on Wednesday). Any chance that you could offer a long range forecast?

Thanks for putting the audio & video of your show on iTunes. Nice to be able to watch\listen to it on my commute.

alhrabosky,

McCutchen is already a star. Snider isn’t. Can Snider turn out to be a better fantasy player than McCutchen? Maybe, but he’s got a lot of work to do to get there. Even taking into account that steals isn’t a category here, I’ll go with the known over the unknown and take McCutchen.

Zach
