Pitch or Ditch for Wednesday, May 19

Pitch
or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
their
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next guy. The
concept
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
starters,
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
wire
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
“PoD”
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
last
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

Hey 411 guys,

should I drop D. Freese for J. Bruce? It would mean benching C. Headley who has had an awful week to put Bruce in lineup…I’m about to make Freese my backup Util for M. Reynolds…

What do you think? Thanks
Josh

I have Jimmy Rollins back from his injury so I am stacked at SS. Also I have BJ Upton, Figgins, gardner, shin cho choo as well.

Hey guys, in my keeper league I won the race to Starlin Castro. I just got Rollins back off the DL and we don’t have a MI slot. 1) How good is Castro, now and going forward? 2) If I wanted shop him for some pitching help, possibly with a lesser pitcher (Penny maybe), what kind of guy should I be targeting in a keeper league? I feel like I really need the pitching even though my staff looks ok, I’m getting beaten every week (Verlander, Burnett, Kennedy, Sheets, Penny w/ De La Rosa stashed). Thanks, as always!

Hi Guys,

Remember last week I asked about your views on trading Capps for Carpenter? Well it didn’t come off, but I did trade Capps for Gallardo – your thoughts on the trade?

Cheers,

Steve in the UK

Hi Guys

I took Adam Jones in the 9th round which I think by your calculations I should give him another 3-4 weeks. Do you think he is likely to turn it round in that time?

Also – Is it worth stashing Travis Snider on my bench (Curtis Granderson is using up the DL slot) (6 man bench) or do you think he is replaceable?

many thanks

Tim

NFBC Sat League
We have FAB Sunday Night, I need pitching and both Zambrano and Morrow are available how much should I bid?
Thanks,
WDB Girth

I have an abundance of OF’s BJ,Cruz,Bruce,Heyward,Sizemore (who is hurt now so that is easier) Bautista and Delman young can only start three who should I play and should I try to trade any of them because I only have Stewart and 2nd and this is a 12team mixed league and there is really nothing on the wire for 2nd baseman

Josh,

Yeah, I’d make that move. Bruce is getting on base a lot more consistently since the start of May and simply has more upside than Freese.

Bill,

If you can’t somehow capitalize on Gonzalez’s hot start and deal him for someone decent, he’s the guy to drop. Gonzalez has for the most part been a marginal offensive player throughout his career while Andrus can carry you in steals and will only get better with the bat.
***********************************************
frankiejay,

I believe I already addressed that question sometime last week but for a Castro/Penny package in a keeper league I think it’s reasonable to ask for someone at the level of, for example, A.J. Burnett, James Shields, Ricky Nolasco, just to name a few guys.
*********************************************
beezer,

I wouldn’t make that trade. Would like to see Price get through a full season before proclaiming a clear-cut #2 in mixed leagues and simply wouldn’t be too eager to deal Pujols. How about Pujols and B.J. Upton for Longoria and Kinsler? Might even be willing to sub in Choo for Upton but that’s about as far as I’d go.
**********************************************
Steve,

Love it. Like the idea of selling high on Capps and the only thing separating Gallardo from fantasy ace status is the high walk rate. If he can improve in that area, watch out!

Zach

pitch on freakin’ brett cecil but not doug fister, the league leader in ERA?!?!

i know the jays are hot, but you gotta run fister out there until he runs out of gas.

Who’s better the rest of the way? Adam Lind or Carlos Lee? at RF, do you go with Hawpe or Bruce? At C, Montero or Doumit the rest of the way? Also, should I ride a Juan Uribe at SS over Alexi Ramirez for a while? Thanks

David Wright has only 1 HR in CITI Field and the rest are all on the road. He is on pace to have 200+ strikeouts.

Should D.Wright owners be worried?

Tim,

Yeah, Jones has so far been one of the biggest busts of 2010 and I really have no idea when/if he’ll snap out of it. He looks lost at the plate and I honestly wouldn’t give him more than a few more weeks before cutting him in a 12 team mixed. As for Snider, if you don’t have an available DL slot and see an attractive waiver wire option, I have no problem with you dropping him. Loads of potential, yes, but I’m not all that convinced he’ll reach it this season.
**********************************************
Girth,

Morrow has the upside but Zambrano has the track record. Even though he’s clearly not the same pitcher he was a few years ago, I’d lean towards Zambrano here. I’m a lot higher on Big Z than most as despite the high walk rate he has improved upon his K rate. But the shuffle back and forth between the rotation and bullpen is a concern. I’m not all that certain what to expect from him upon his return as a starter but it’s not like Morrow is a sure thing either.
*******************************************
Robert,

Cruz, B.J. and Heyward would be my choices to start but if you can deal Heyward (value extremely high right now and for good reason) for say Ian Kinsler, that would be a nice move.

Zach

thebartleys,

I’ll go with Lind as he’s younger and has the better supporting cast. Bruce remains a solid keeper prospect but for this season alone I prefer the more consistent Hawpe. Montero over Doumit and Uribe over Alexei for now, though Alexei’s bat is beginning to show some signs of life.
**********************************************
newnugget,

I’m not all that concerned about Wright. Yeah, the strikeouts are a bit alarming but the guy is still on pace for a 30/30 season and as a career .307 hitter, you have to think he’ll start figuring things out soon. Be careful not to trade Wright at a discount right now. I think you’ll regret it.

Zach

Guys,

12 team mixed 5×5 league. I have 56 out of 60 possible pitching points but only 14 pts on offense. Do I deal David Price for Joey Votto?

Thx,
Brian

Brian,

Just answered your question on the other post.
