Pitch or Ditch for Tuesday, May 25

or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next guy. The
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

would be the time

Hi guys,

2 questions here:

Will Michael Stanton be called up June 1st and can he have a Braun/Longoria type impact like they did after their call up?

Also , I trade Wieters, Aramis Ramirez and Danks and recieve Felix and McCann? Which side is beter?
My pitchers: Danks, Gallardo, Haren, Oswalt, Buchholz, Latos, Garcia
My hitters: Wieters, Votto, Hill, Wright, Drew, J Up, B Up, Aramis, Sizemore, Ellsbury, Soriano, Stanton.

Thanks as always,

Hi Guys,

I Need some trade advice. 14 team mixed league. I’ve been offered Roy Halladay for Cory’s mancrush(es) Edwin Encarnacion + Ricky Nolasco. I’m in the middle of the pack in ERA and WHIP, 1st in K’s. My other 3B is David Wright. Rest of my Staff is Lester, Hamels, Price, Romero, Morrow, Holland.

The other owner needs Power at 3B?

Is it a fair deal on both sides? Would you pull the trigger?

This is easy and let me save the guys time: TAKE HALLADAY – NO THOUGHT NECESSARY!

I have great and hot pitching, but a cold offense. My offense for the most part has guys who will eventually turn it on (Pujols, Holliday, etc). I thought since I have deep pitching that I should trade some for a big bat.

I traded Liriano, Penny, and David Ortiz (not much room for him on my roster) for Alex Rodriguez. Do you guys like that trade?

Also, I am in an ESPN points league and Power and RBI’s gets the most points for the hitters and Wins, K’, lack of ER, and IP get the most points for pitchers.

I think it’s unfair to expect any callup to have a Braun/Longoria immediate impact but I am very high on Stanton. His Minor League numbers so far (.318 AVG 17 HR 43 RBIs in 40 games) are flat out ridiculous. Not sure about June 1 but I’d be shocked if he’s not up by, say, July 1. As for that trade, the Felix/McCann side wins hands down.

Do it…do it now! Not quite vetoable but definitely in your favor and an outstanding opportunity to capitalize on Edwin’s monster weekend.

That’s an absolute no-brainer. You’re getting by far the best player in the deal, who happens to be a first rounder, for a very good pitcher with durability concerns, an overachieving pitcher and a declining slugger. Sounds good to me.

I can’t believe its taken me this long to send you guys a question seeing how frustrated with my team.
14 team mixed league and I need a shake up. Namely Chone Figgens and Jose Bautista. I’m shopping Jose like crazy but have no problems keeping him on the squad, whats his staying power? Now with Figgens I thought I was a genius preseason because envisioned getting a top 7 2b for the price of a 10 ten 3b. However the M’s continue to hit like the bad news bears and I’m sorry but scoring 15 runs on the Padres isn’t enough to get me excited. Is he worth holding onto and waiting or should I just cut my losses (I currently have David Eckstein, and Theriot and Ian Desmond sit in FA, not super optimistic.)
I just traded V Mar for Johan S and plugged John Buck in as C but having three blue jays on the same squad (John Buck, Jose Bautista, and Edwin) makes me nervous.
Thanks in advance!

So a week ago, someone asked for advice on which of the following three catchers to pick up off the wire: Napoli, Yadier Molina or Bengie Molina. I told him to pick Napoli, as he was getting hot and would provide more power.

Zach disagreed:
“For the next few weeks I’ll take either Molina over Napoli, who I don’t really trust yet. Don’t forget that it took injuries to both Jeff Mathis and Bobby Wilson to open the door for Napoli to get regular playing time, so he’s probably still in Scioscia’s doghouse. Go with Bengie if you’re looking for power and Yadier if you need AVG.”

So let’s look at their respective performances over the last week:

Napoli 7 for 18, 4 R, 3 HR, 7 RBI
Y Molina 4 for 18, 1 R, 2 RBI
B Molina 1 for 16, 0 R, 0 HR, 0 RBI

Well geez, would you look at that? Who woulda thunk it?

Yeah, yeah, I know “small sample size”. Well we can continue to track this until Mathis gets back (whereupon Napoli will be sharing duties again and becomes much less valuable). As it stands now: jakoye 1, Zach 0.

Ive been offered Barry Zito and David Ortiz for Ian Kennedy and Billy Butler. I need pitching but and my hitting is already pretty good. Im in the middle of the pack and looking for a pitcher. What do i DO?

You give up Kennedy and Butler for Ortiz and Zito?

Um, no, especially if your hitting is “pretty good”. Kennedy is very likely a better pitcher than Zito at this point and he will especially help you in Ks, where Zito is weak.

Ortiz will provide more power than Butler, but Butler will win in every other category. There’s also the possibility that Ortiz goes back to sucking like he was in April/early May.

I wouldn’t touch that deal if I were you.

I have been offered a trade in a mixed 5×5 league. The offer is Albert Pujols & Dustin Pedroia for Adam Wainwright, Andrew Bailey & Robinson Cano.

I need power & have extra pitching. I think the offer is fair. What do YOU think?

as ever,

James Kent

Hey guys. Randy Wells, Carlos Silva and Rick Porcello are on my waiver wire..Who do I pick up? Are Brian Matusz or Kevin Slowey worth dropping for any these bumbs.

In need of some major help on this trade, oh man here we go!
I am in need of saves, (currently have HOFFMAN & VILLANUEVA)and am constantly playing the closer carousel for better or for worse. I think its a good trade in my favor but a little worried my rotation will suffer because of it so hesitant to pull the trigger. Should I accept this trade taking into account my rotaion and offense. Sorry for the lengthy message, and thanks in advance.

Hey guys thanks for all the help. I talked to you last week about a trade that was pretty much Bay for Ichiro and then Bay went on a 7-8 tear. LOL. Anyway I am in a head to head match-up this week that is real important. 1 vs 2. Should I start D. Fister tonight even though he is playing Verlander and the other kid is starting Verlander or should I bench Fister because i doubt he can pull a victory tonight??

Shop Jose Bautista now before he turns back into, you know, Jose Bautista! Excellent sell-high opportunity. As for Figgins, I’m very surprised that he’s hitting this poorly considering his solid track record and the track record is honestly the only thing that would keep me from dropping him. But, in my opinion, it’s enough of a reason to hold onto him. I’d pick up Theriot and play him in the meantime but wouldn’t cut bait on Figgins just yet. As for owning three Jays, I’m never too concerned about owning multiple players from the same team. But as I mentioned before, TRADE BAUTISTA. That solves it.

I’d pass. Even though Ortiz is starting to pick it up, I’d still rather have the more steady Butler. especially if Papi isn’t 1B eligible. But the main reason why I wouldn’t do the deal is that I don’t see the switch from Kennedy to Zito as an improvement at all. Kennedy’s been lights out of late and solid pretty much all season while Zito’s coming off his worst start, which could be a sign of things to come. At best this is a wash. But I’d much rather bank on Kennedy’s upside than roll the dice on Zito.

Waiver wire Question. Bautista or encarnacion. Bautista has been on fire, but has never hit like this before. Encarnacion has been looking at greatness for several years but never got there. Also I have Reynolds. Thought about trading him and picking up won of these guys. Leaning toward Encarnacion. Your thoughts please!!

12 team h2h. Trade Q:

CC for Johan and Zito

Fair offer but I’d much rather have the Pujols/Pedroia side. I’ll call the Cano for Pedroia switch a wash and I’d gladly trade Wainwright and Bailey for Albert.

I’d hold onto Hill. Do you really need a 6th outfielder in a league that starts only 3 OFs? If Hill ever starts hitting, he’ll make for a solid trade chip that you can use to upgrade in another area. Don’t make a move just for the sake of making a move, especially since it will have little impact on your starting lineup.

I’d pick up Wells and dump Matusz. Overall, I’ve been pretty impressed with Wells (especially his last start @TEX) and the rookie Matusz can be expected to go through his ups and downs, especially in the hard-hitting AL East. If this were a long-term keeper league my answer would be different, but for 2010 Wells is the safer choice.

Very even deal but given your dire need for a closer, go ahead and accept it. A Garza for Bailey trade favors Garza but not by much considering Bailey’s continued success in the closer role. Then there’s the downgrade from Morales to LaRoche, which again is not really that huge. Both of these small to medium sized downgrades are made up by the HUGE upgrade from Boesch to Holliday. Boesch could very well be a flash in the pan while Holliday’s a legit elite outfielder, certainly the best player in the deal.

Never make a lineup decision solely based on Wins as they’re very overrated. Base the decision more on recent overall performance. Fister’s on a roll. You simply have to pitch him.

Are we done here??

Yeah, I’d go with Encarnacion. Bautista’s blistering start has really come out of nowhere. He can’t possibly keep this up. He’s just two homers shy of his single-season high of 16 home runs! As for Encarnacion, there is legitimate reason to believe that he’s on the verge of a breakthrough year. Might not happen but I’d much rather take my chances on him than a guy who’s been a career-long platoon player.

Would rather have CC. Johan’s very good but, at this stage of his career, not quite at CC’s level. Zito doesn’t make up for that difference.

Great call on Peavy @ Indians😦
