Pitch or Ditch for Thursday, June 17

Pitch
or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
their
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next guy. The
concept
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
starters,
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
wire
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
“PoD”
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
last
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

Can you provide a comparison for Pedro Alvarez with another Major League hitter? You nailed it with Mike Stanton -> Adam Dunn. Was wondering if Alvarez has someone like that, best case/worst case…

Great Show guys watch it religously… So a few days ago i asked your advice bout an Arod trade where I gave up stanton.. well this is the trade I did accept in a 12 team h2h 5×5 keeper league.. I give Stanton Mike Young and Marcum for Arod Lind and Slowey… did I get rid of a great keeper talent?? Also I know someone willing to pay high for Arod.. like a Adrian Gonzo and a near Ace pitcher… maybe verlander. Thoughts??

Adendum to post above. Headley/P.Alvarez at 3B, being offered Mark Reynolds for Tyler Clippard. H2H 12tm with HLD, WHIP, K/BB, K/9… Clippard has been VITAL thus far. Is this still a slam-dunk or should I be weary of Mark’s quad injury?

Who would pickup Bonderman or Hochevar?
Thanks
Josh

Can you evaluate two trades w/ seperate teams I’m about to hit accept button for…anibal & leake for Carlos Santana & Kuroda
then
Stanton for Lilly…
Now rotation would be Lester, Strasburg, Lilly, Latos, & Kuroda + POD
OF: Choo, Rasmus, & Ludwick.

Did I vastly improve my rotation at same time I getting help for Weiters being main reason for deals…
Thanks guys! You’ve saved my … on more than 1 occasion!!
Josh

Hi guys,
another Q, I give up Strasburg and Rasmus get Santana + Braun. Another option Stras + Rasmus + Beltre FOR Santana + Braun + Sandoval (just a 3B swap)

Which one is the better, would u do it?

THX so much!!

“You nailed it with Mike Stanton -> Adam Dunn.”

Mark Reynolds is the comp for Stanton

they both technically had 4 years of minor league service…and coincidentally are only separated by 1 plate appearance. 1393 for Reynolds, 1392 for Stanton.

Reynolds – .280/.360/.525 – 322 Ks
Stanton – .274/.369//569 – 371 Ks

Hey guys,

In a 12-team mixed points league, is Qualls even worth keeping if I have Heilman? I’d love to open up a slot for PoD in my lineup, but if there’s a shot at Qualls figuring out his delivery, he might be worth holding on to. Thoughts?

Now that Peavy is hurt, would you recommend starting Buehrle in his place?

Trade Question:
12 Team Mixed Points League. I need a Closer. Young, Morneau, Jurrjens, Bruce for Reynolds, Putz, Lidge, Berkman
I have Extra OF.
Thanks,
Girth

Is Juan Uribe for real? I know he’s showed flashes in the past but he could really be having a career year. He’s 1st in Rbi’s and 2nd in HR’s from the SS position. He’s ranked as the 4th best SS and 6th best 2B right now and has mulit-position elig. Is it possible he goes 280, 30, 100? Should I drop S Drew for him?

Thanks, appreciate it

I picked up Carlos Santana when news broke of his call-up. I already have Brian McCann. I hate carrying two catchers. I know McCann hasn’t been great the first half, but I expect (hope) he trends up. So I’ve been floating both of them for potential trades in a 12-team mixed, and getting what I believe are low ball offers. The best of the bunch was a straight up McCann for Chris B. Young (who became DTM last season). What are some reasonable expectations for starting pitchers and infielders in a trade for either of these catchers?

deamonizer,

Close call considering it’s a keeper league but I think you made the right decision in accepting the A-Rod deal. Marcum for Slowey is pretty much a wash, if not a slight win for Slowey, and I’d lean towards A-Rod and Lind over Young and Stanton. A-Rod is still the best player in the deal and Lind’s stock is so low right now that he’s actually a decent trade target. As for the Reynolds deal, it’s a little risky taking into account that your league counts holds but I’d still do it.

dmestre,

We’re planning on using your question on today’s show so stay tuned for that.

Josh,

Even before Hochevar went on the DL, I would’ve said Bonderman. Now, it’s a no-brainer!

As for your other question, I’m fine with those pair of your trades. You’re essentially swapping Stanton for Santana (at worst a wash but probably a gain considering position scarcity) and Anibal/Leake for Kuroda/Lilly, which in my opinion is a clear win.
*******************************************
dani,

I’d definitely do the first deal…pass on the second one. I actually slightly prefer Beltre to Sandoval so the 3B swap would only hurt you.
*******************************************
Jeff,

Yeah, I’m dealing with the same situation in one of my leagues and have decided to hold onto Qualls for now. Tough to lose that roster spot but I would hate to drop Qualls only to see him closing in a couple weeks. Heilman is far from a sure thing so I can definitely see him imploding and handing the job right back to Qualls.
******************************************
bschroed,

I have minimal confidence in Buehrle right now but coming off a great start and @ PIT…sure, why not trot him out there!

Zach

Girth,

Yep, I’m fine with the trade. The key here is Lidge, who’s been outstanding since returning from the DL. The downgrade from Morneau to Reynolds is significant, but getting back Berkman sort of makes up for it…Lance is bound to start hitting one of these days.
***************************************
maysways,

Uribe’s start to 2010 has been a shock to me as well. I never saw it coming, but note that he did whack 12 homers in the second half last year, so it seems like he’s carried over the power surge into this season. I can’t imagine him continuing at this pace but 25 homers and 85 RBIs is entirely possible. Believe it or not, I would take Uribe over Drew, who just hasn’t shown consistency in either the AVG or power departments.
******************************************
csupp,

I know McCann’s off to a slow start but you should be settling for nothing less than a soft ace or #2 type SP (think Oswalt, Garza, Weaver etc) Don’t be afraid to wait it out until McCann picks it up and the right offers come along. CBY for McCann is a flat out no.

Zach

i cant stand the rays they just a boring team
