Pitch or Ditch for Wednesday, June 23
Pitch
or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
their
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next guy. The
concept
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
starters,
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
wire
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
“PoD”
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
last
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

Category Chart #2
Cueto @
Mazzaro – Cueto
better last time out, should continue recovery vs.
A’s
Nolasco @ Matusz -
Nolasco will continue
recovery vs. O’s
Carpenter @
Romero
Correia @
Shields – struggling Correia bad gamble vs. Rays (Garza may start instead of
Shields, BTW)
Maholm @
Nippert
Hudson @
Buehrle – Buehrle
pitching better but not chancing him vs. Braves
Ely @ Pineiro
- John Ely, meet Earth. Welcome back. Pineiro stays hot at
home.
Wells @
Lee
- Cliff Lee has a 67/4 K/BB ratio. Think about that.
Bannister @
Strasburg
Westbrook @
Kendrick
Bonderman @
Dickey – Dickey’s
been doing it with smoke and mirrors
Liriano @ Parra -
with
a 23-7 K-BB ratio since returning to the rotation, Parra is passing the
tests
Lackey @
Jimenez – Lackey not great
yet but scratching back to relevance
Vazquez @
Willis
Zito @
Myers – draft day bargain
vets still getting it done
SIANO’S PICKS
Cueto @
Mazzaro
Nolasco @ Matusz
Carpenter @ Romero
Correia @ Shields - Shields was cut in a
ten team, I scooped him up.
Maholm @
Nippert
Hudson @ Buehrle – Mark is on a roll and
owns NL.
Ely @ Pineiro
Wells @ Lee
Bannister @ Strasburg – KC has been
pesky to me all year, is it possible this is the chosen one’s first loss? Gut
feeling is all. Gotta pitch.
Westbrook @ Kendrick – Kendrick blue plate
special, shut down Yanks on road and gets Tribe at home, but you’re chasing a
win.
Bonderman @ Dickey – Ha, this is a
good a matchup, a specimen of POD
Liriano @
Parra
Lackey @ Jimenez – I think I’ve
been right on Lackey but Rockies are hurting so can’t say
ditch.
Vazquez @ Willis – I’m sold on Javy
for now.
Zito @ Myers – Cory will say pitch Myers, I’m
fasting.

Please rank these # 2 catchers in order of preference.
Avila, Lucroy, Castro, Salti
Vicente Padilla or Brett Anderson who will have more value for the rest of the year?
Keeper league here. Should I replace either Smoak or Austin Jackson with either Huff or Chris B. Young? Thanks!
I am thinking of adding 2-3 pitchers to my team. I usually try to hold on to my pitchers even if we can waiver them daily. I currently have Jimenez, Romero, Hughes, Shields, and Marcum. I am looking at Peavy, Scherzer, Dickey, Pavano or De La Rosa coming off the DL next month. Our league uses the format of strikeouts, Wins, Whips, ERA and saves. Thanks for your help, I have been using it and its working. Thanks again. Al
Who would you go with Cueto @ A’s or Piniero vs Dodgers?
Thanks
Josh
Fred in Cali!
I’ll say Lucroy (has taken over #1 C role in MIL), Avila (getting plenty of PT), Castro, Salty (not even close to returning to big leagues).
Padilla’s healthy while Anderson isn’t but I’d still take Anderson…much more upside and higher K rate. He’s definitely worth stashing. Padilla’s easily replaceable.

thrbuddhas,
I’d make both of those switches immediately. Huff is outproducing Smoak in every category and is a lot more consistent. Jackson’s fading fast and doesn’t project to be much of a power hitter. Young is putting up very nice numbers across the board and enjoying a fine bounce back season…not to mention that he’s still only 26 years old.
Zach
hey guys i was offered mcCutchen for bay and callaspo should i do this i am also wondering if i should pick up ryan ludwick or carlos lee off waivers i would be dropping mike stanton cause he just strikes out way to much what do u think

Hey Guys
12 H2H mixed points league
I was offered Cain and Hamilton for Grienke and Carlos Gonzalez
I would get Cain and Hammy
Might counter with Car Go and Nolasco for Cain
What do you think
Cheers
Jordan
I was just offered a deal and it seems to good to be true so I wanted to make sure there wasn’t any information I was missing…I’d give up Latos and get Carpenter…
Now Latos has been hot and actually better than Carp in last month…I’ve heard that SD will limit his innings…is thisvtrade a no-brainer?!?!
Thanks
Josh
Al,
Peavy’s really come on of late and obviously has the best track record of that bunch, so he’d be my first choice. I’ll rank the rest Scherzer, Pavano, De La Rosa, Dickey.
*******************************************
Josh,
I’ll go with Cueto. He’s probably a bit riskier than Pineiro but he’s got considerably more upside and it’s a favorable matchup.
****************************************
dballer,
Do the deal. McCutchen’s the best player and Bay is showing little sign of breaking out of his season-long funk. I’m still high on Stanton but expect ups and downs. I’m fine with swapping him for Ludwick, the more proven player. Still not sold on Lee.
Zach
Z,
Cueto, Nolasco, Pineiro…but for right now I’d drop Nolasco and Pineiro for Danks and Pavano.
*******************************************
Jordan,
If you could use some extra power, I’m fine with the deal. Seriously doubt he’ll do that counteroffer.
*****************************************
Josh,
An absolute no-brainer. Don’t even think twice about it.
Zach
How confident are you in your Ubaldo pick? He had a dizzy spell last night and had to leave the game – on top of that, he’s pitching against the BoSox in Denver… not the best matchup. I have him rostered in a league with capped innings, so thinking about sitting this one out. Thoughts?
