Pitch or Ditch for Wednesday, June 30
Pitch
or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
their
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next guy. The
concept
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
starters,
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
wire
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
“PoD”
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
last
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

Hey guys,
12 team 5×5. I’m in desperate need of OF & SB help and have an enticing offer on the table…Cliff Lee &Tim Hudson for Nelson Cruz &Cole Hamels. What do you think? Would love to sell high on Hudosn
Matt in NYC
12 team h2h points: Would you give up Kemp and Kurt Suzuki to get back Mauer? Doing this means that my empty outfield position would be filled by Garrett Jones (my current 1B) and put Carlos Pena at 1B off my bench.
Thanks as always!
Matt,
I like it. Lee’s still the best player in the deal but you’re getting back both a high-end OF and a pitcher in Hamels who could very well have a better second half than Hudson. At the very least, you’re getting a strikeout upgrade.

If you had to pick one going forward would it be J. Upton or Alex Rios? Which one will have overall best value?
I can get Upton for Latos straight up or get Rios for Latos&Quentin….
Thanks
Josh

season up to now. However just recently picked up Bonderman and feel hes
a graduate and too valuable to drop, and so don’t have a PoD spot
anymore.
Would you drop Bondo and carry on PoDing again, or keep him and quit
PoDing for now (both Dice-k and Gorzo are available for today). Or the
other possible guys I could drop instead of Bondo are G-Gonz (gio),
Smoak (on bench), or Mad Max (scherzer).
Thanks guys

i am in a 20 team kepper league. keep 5 pitchers and 5 hitters. i just got offered cahill and either Danks or Shields for Carpenter. after carpenter my best pitchers are tommy Hunter, Wade LeBlanc, and Aaron Harang. do i take the deal?
Ed,
I’d pass on that one. I think you’re selling too low on Kemp and Mauer’s total loss of power is putting a damper on his overall value.

Josh,
In a non-keeper I’ll go with Rios. He’s been the more consistent player. Upton’s red hot right now but does go through massive cold spells, so the steady Rios would be my choice.

Big Barry,
One of the main benefits of PoD is that should you stumble upon a pitcher who is on a roll, you can keep throwing him out there with the satisfaction of knowing you gave up nothing to get him, so I’m all for holding onto Bonderman for now. I actually slightly prefer Gio to Bonderman so I wouldn’t drop Gonzalez. Note that Bonderman hasn’t been great recently so you might soon be forced to resume PoDing anyway.

dd,
Pass. You’re giving up the best player in the deal and a surefire keeper. Danks and Shields are also quality keepers in this format but I’d rather hold onto the clear-cut ace.

I have a trade Dilemma….
I am about to send Hanley and Brandon Morrow away for Felix Hernandez, Yovani Gallardo, and Bobby Jenks. I can replace Hanley with Scuturo but obviously lose a lot of power steals etc. Do yall think these pitchers are good enough to send away my 1st round pick? Thanks
Ok gurus,
which side gets upgrade more:
latos, rasmus, & lilly for rios&peavy
or
latos&rasmus for elvis&CarGo
thanks
bigtown,
That’s a fine return but I still just couldn’t bring myself to deal Hanley without getting back a top-shelf hitter. Maybe if one of the SPs were replaced by a hitter, I’d do it. But I’d pass on that offer.

jaayoub,
Very close but I’d lean towards the first one. Rios and Peavy are, in my opinion, the best players in that trade while one can make the argument that Rasmus is a more valuable player than CarGo. I like both of those though.
