Pitch or Ditch for Thursday, July 1

Pitch
or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
their
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next guy. The
concept
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
starters,
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
wire
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
“PoD”
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
last
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

CORY’S PICKS

Marcum @ Masterson
Rowland-Smith @ Sabathia
Cahill @ Arrieta – Arrieta struggling too much to use even at home vs. A’s
Niemann @ Pavano
Wilson @ Weaver - Wilson’s command problems will cost him at some point
TBD @ Silva
J.Santana @ Livan – Johan’s track record earns more leeway… not Livan’s
Hamels @ McCutchen
Wolf @ Hawksworth – Wolf’s OK at home vs. weak offenses, but not here
Bumgarner @ Cook
Moehler @ Garland – not a big Garland fan but home vs. Houston seems reasonable

Hey boys, hope all’s well…Two quickies:

1. just read that the Reds are calling up Travis Wood to start tomorrow. Thoughts on Wood in a 10/H2H/mixed/keeper, with a 12-start/wkly limit, or at least a POD tomorrow? His k/bb @ Louiville is downright nasty.

2. in need of speed and was just offered Haren (or Gallardo), podsednick and victorino for Heyward and tommy hanson. not open to moving hanson AND heyward, and don’t want 2 avg OF’s to replace one solid keeper. your thoughts on the offer, or a direction I may head for counter? his other speedy players are bourn, pierre and crisp, in addition to pods and victorino.

should’ve signed above…

Thanks, as always:

Fellas, here’s my dilemma. Tulo on DL and Drew my current SS. Possible upgrades(?) are Furcal, Tejada, Barmes.
Possible dumps: Uribe, I.Stewart.

10tm H2H weekly keeper league R/HR/RBI/SB/AVG/OBP/SLG.

Would you make a change here, or ride it out with Drew?
Thanks.

I have J. Jurrjens coming off the DL and need to drop another pitcher, but I don’t see anybody that I feel comfortable dropping. Right now I am leaving Jurrjens on the DL but I will have to make room for him soon. My pitchers are Zito, Vazquez, Latos, Sanchez, Hughes, Dempster, Johan Santana with F. Cordero, Rauch, Dotel, and Street as relievers.
I have tried to do a 2 for 1 upgrade but nobody wants to do a deal. I think everybody in my league see that I need to drop somebody and are just waiting me out so they can pick up off the waiver wire. Who is the odd man out here? I can’t drop a position player either because I won’t have enough bench players.
Thanks
Nate

J,

1. Wood’s Minor League numbers this year sure are impressive but I’m always wary of starting anyone (not named Stephen Strasburg) who is making his big league debut. Plus, there’s the Edinson Volquez factor. With Volquez set to return very soon, perhaps as early as next week, Wood could very well get sent back down, so whether or not he can make a meaningful impact this season is up in the air.

2. A very tempting offer considering that both Haren and Gallardo also have solid keeper value but I understand why you’re hesitant to deal both Heyward and Hanson. If your main need is speed, why not just work a smaller deal for Victorino or Pods? It seems unnecessary to get all those other pitchers involved. Also don’t get so attached to that one particular owner. Maybe you can do better dealing with someone else.

Casey,

I’d hold onto Drew for the time being but dump Stewart for Furcal. This would allow you to play Furcal over Drew for now and then possibly drop Drew down the road should he continue his mediocre hitting.

Nate,

Why not just drop Jurrjens? I personally prefer all of your current SPs over Jair. Not sure if the system allows you to dump a DL guy so if not (or if you decide you want to keep Jurrjens) Vazquez would be my dump choice. He’s easily been the most erratic of that group.

Zach

Hi Zach thanks for responding to my question yesterday, just in addition though have one thing to throw out there in regards to the same topic (PoT strategy).

I think the innings limit really is a huge factor, with no innings limit in my league I can pick up a PoD guy every day, and as a result am dominating in wins and k’s, without having my ERA and WHIP affected too much.

Now I totally agree that ‘graduates’ should normally be kept, but don’t you think that in no innings limit (or starts limit) leagues, you have to make room for a PoD spot at all times (provided the leagues not too deep), so that you can load up and top your league in punchouts and W’s? I get the feeling that an extra 4 starters every 5 days, would be more beneficial than just keeping the graduate guy- what do you reckon.

Oh and if you did decide it would be worthwhile to drop a player to free a PoD spot, who out of Scherzer, Bondo, Smoak and Gio would you cut.

Thanks
