Pitch or Ditch for Friday, July 2

Pitch
or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
their
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next guy. The
concept
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
starters,
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
wire
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
“PoD”
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
last
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

CORY’S PICKS

Cecil @ Burnett -
both struggling lately, sit this one out

Gonzalez @
Talbot

Fister @
Scherzer – Scherzer obviously didn’t like Toledo

Bergesen @
Wakefield

F.Garcia @
Lewis – Garcia solid at home and/or vs. weak matchups, but not
here

Price @ Baker – pains me
to say ditch on Baker but I must

Davies @ Saunders -
Saundo great at home last time, do it again and we’ll talk

Arroyo @
Dempster

Niese @
Atilano

Moyer @
Ohlendorf

Johnson @
Medlen
– Medlen has passed
all the tests, he’s a grad

Lincecum @
Chacin

Narveson @
J.Garcia – was Garcia’s last start a blip or the start of a
correction?

Kuroda @ Jackson -
kinda have to start E-Jax after the no-no, right?

Oswalt @
Latos

***Siano says:

Gamblers go for it on
A.J. or bench, but don’t cut in 12 teamer.

Talbot interesting
gamble.

I’m off the Baker
train.

Dare I say pitch on
Moyer?

Tim needs to dominate
here, no?

Let’s see how the 149
pitches looks now. I say pitch. Kuroda now an ace in POD
chart.

Oswalt @ Latos could
be a 1-0 thriller!!!

hey guys whats your opinion on strasberg he gets alot of K’s but has no run support and his team makes to many errors he should be 4-0 but isnt because of those reason should i try and sell high on him because of his name and K’s. i have a guy in my league considering trading me pujols, moyer and ortiz for strasberg kendrick and ludrick. also what is your opinion on jamie moyer and if i should try another deal for him cause he has been hot as of late thanks again

one more guys what do u think on gavin floyd as well

Hey guys, I am trying to pick up saves. I am currently sitting dead in the middle within 10 saves of 3 other teams. My current closers are broxton, pappelbon, ardsma, and simon. I am trying to pick up another guy to make the difference. I was offered Feliz for Zimmerman (my other corners are Berkman, Beltre, Bautista and Luke Scott to rotate in). Zim hasn’t had much lately but usually has a good second half. I could also do John Rauch for Berkman. Either worth pursuing?

Thanks,
Vande

sorry to keep bugging u guys i wrote u earlier today about strasberg since then i have a possible trade offer from a guy who is more reliable in following through with trades in our league i would send strasberg, kendrick, ludrick and either alex gonlazes or tejada for david price miguel cabrera, and 1 of 3 OFs ichiro, hamilton, or shin-soo choo i know i should do this deal but which OF should i go for and what order thanks again and sorry for bugging u guys so much

Hey guys, I’ve been offered Cano and Ludwick for K. Johnson and Rios. I’d be losing SB’s and maybe BB’s, but that seems about it. I’m in a 12-team mixed roto league and could use the power stats. Does this seem like a trade that benefits me or is it even, at best.

dballer,

Although I wouldn’t actively shop Strasburg (remember not to overvalue wins as wins will eventually come with good pitching) any deal in which you can get back Pujols is worth serious consideration. In fact, I’d jump all over that offer. As for Moyer, I’m fine with you acquiring him as a throw-in but specifically targeting him now would be a mistake. He’s a sell-high guy, not a buy-high guy. Put more stock into the big picture (last few seasons) than the small sample size of the last few starts. Moyer’s not a reliable source for strikeouts and hasn’t posted a WHIP below 1.32 since 2003.

Floyd’s clearly turned the corner after a rough start to the season and I’d much rather have him than Moyer. Unfortunately, the window to buy low on Gavin is rapidly closing.

Vande,

Pass on Zim for Feliz. That’s way too high of a price to pay for Neftali. Berkman for Rauch, on the other hand, is very intriguing. Try to squeeze a little more out of that owner but ultimately I think I’d accept it.

locke,

Do it! Though I’m a little concerned about Ludwick and his “mysterious” injury, the upgrade from Johnson to Cano is enormous. Rios also has a history of fading in the second half. I’m not saying for certain that he’ll do the same this year, but the opportunity to acquire Cano is one you don’t want to pass up.

Zach

How would you rank the following pitchers? Pavano, Niemann, Kershaw, Hanson. Thanks.

10 team mixed keeper, 5 x 5. I was offered Jose Reyes for Stephen Strasburg. My SS is Alex Gonzalez and my MI is Stephen Drew. SP’s are Billingsley, Liriano, Garza, Jaime Garcia, and Strasburg. Thoughts? Where do you see Strasburg’s value for the rest of the year and beyond?

H & A

Burnett, welcome to my bench until someone wants to trade for you. I would rather pitch Mr. six finger himself – Antonio Alfonseca!

Hey guys,
12-team 5X5 non-keeper. I’m being offered Fielder and Furcal and I would give up Teixeira. My SS’s are O. Cabrera and Tejada. What do you think of this deal?

-Ben

dballer,

Absolutely do that deal! Close call with those OFs…really depends on what you need…HR/RBI, AVG/SB or HR/SB. I’d lean towards Hamilton with Choo and then Ichiro close behind, but you can’t really go wrong with any of those three guys.
******************************************
Glenn,

From this point forward I’d say Kershaw, Hanson, Niemann, Pavano (mostly because of lack of Ks).
*******************************************
H&A,

I think you have to do it. When in doubt, always lean towards the hitter and Reyes, when healthy (which seems to be the case), has already proven that he can put up first round-caliber numbers. Strasburg obviously has immense upside but he’s been in the Majors for less than a month so the jury is still out as to whether he’ll really be a once in a generation pitcher. Go with the known elite commodity while everyone is drooling over Strasburg.
****************************************
Ben,

Accept immediately. At this point, I’m more confident in Fielder than I am in Tex, plus you’re basically getting Furcal, a clear upgrade over O-Cab and Tejada, for free.

Zach

Hi Zach,

I have a good problem in my very deep 12 team NL 5×5 keeper (with a 6 round minor league draft, auto 7$ 3 year contract once brought up). I have to clear space on my pitching roster. I havce 2 weeks after DL to either activate or drop a player. 9 P spots this it what I have:
Bell 8$ 2010
Broxton 29$ 2011
Josh Johnson 7$ 2010
Dempster 7$ 2010
Nolasco 3$ 2010
Kuroda 12$ 2010
R.A. Dickey 7$ 2012
Brad Lincoln 7$ 2012
Kuo 7$ 2012
Saito 1$ 2010 (off DL)
Happ 1$ 2011 (DL)

I’m safely in first place by 19 points. I like Kuo as a backup for Broxton. I like Saito as a 1$ potential future closer. Lincoln I like long term. Dickey has been helping me nicely while Happ in on the DL, but is he for real? I have to get rid of one of these guys soon and a 2nd once Happ comes back. I also have Tulo and polanco on the DL and I’ve replaced them with the best i could find on the wire: Wilson Valdez and Omar Infante (7$, 2012). I need some suggestions on how to juggle this. No one is biting at Saito for 1$ and in a league this deep I hate to drop players that have been helping me. We have no bench. I want to win this year but still has some good keepers for next year (as you can see I lose most of my pitching after this year to FA).

Higgs

PS: why are the flags at half mast today?

correction:
Saito 1$ 2012

Senator Byrd’s funeral?

now i’m answering my own questions.

higgs,

Try stalling as much as possible but I think ultimately the best choice to drop is Dickey. Just take one look at his career stats and you’ll see that he’s due for a major stat correction. At 35, it’s not like he’s young either. This is a career-long journeyman we’re talking about who has run into some good luck. He’s got little upside and is certainly not a keeper.
