Pitch or Ditch for Friday, July 16

Pitch
or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
their
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next guy. The
concept
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
starters,
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
wire
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
“PoD”
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
last
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

Weaver starting instead of Pineiro on Friday.

Also, you would start Niese at san fran? I know they’re not a potent offense, but he hasn’t exactly been that sharp lately.

Drop Clippard for Feliciano or Storen going into 2nd half? -Clippz has been a lifesaver 1st half, but he has to work back trust in Riggleman. Feliciano hasnt been all too great the past month either, but the Mets are going hard for a playoff push. And he still gets the outs he needs. -I would just grab Storen as Clippard “rehabs” with garbage time, but Pedro has more innings, more k’s and a better K/BB and K/9, both categories in my H2H..-Part of me really wants to stick with Tyler, but his dramatic fall from grace has left a sour taste recently, thoughts?

chowcroft,

Not sharp? 20 2/3 IP 4 ER 21 K over last three starts. I’ll take those numbers into San Fran.

dmestre,

I’m fine with dropping Clippard for Storen. Overall, Drew’s been equally dominant and he is the clear-cut fallback option at closer in the event that Capps either gets injured or loses the job. That in itself is enough of a reason to make the switch.

Zach

Hey Zach,
I’m just not having any luck trying to secure Carpenter in a trade this year so I’m going to try something different…
What do you think of this trade:
Trade: Strasburg & Chris Young
Get: Lincecum & Elvis

I’ll drop A Ramirez and add Delmon Young to put in OF…other OF options are Stubbs, Gomes, DeJesus, crisp, or Fred Lewis Coghlan…
What you think?
Thanks
Josh

Anyone have any idea of timeline for Domonic Brown to be called up? I’m not sure when I should grab him…he’s sitting on my fa wire and I can think of a bunch of teams that would trade for him if I don’t need him.
Should I drop Fowler for him? At what point do I get him? My other OF are Rios, Quentin, C Young, & Choo
Please let me know what you’re thinking abt Brown!
Thanks
Josh

Josh,

Are you in a keeper league? if so drop Fowler immediately and pick up Brown. Otherwise I’d still think about it. Very good chance that Brown gets a chance to get playing time for 2 reasons:

1) Ibanez continues to struggle and Brown comes up hot and takes playing time from him

2) Werth is traded for pitching which is very possible since Amaro has made it clear that upgrading pitching is the top priority and there is less chance of the phils trading Brown for pitching than Isreali peace talks with Hamas. Werth’s price as a FA is most likely more than the phils are willing to pay especailly if they are looking to add payroll to the pitching staff.

3) Charlie is a manager that doesn’t baby veterns. If they are not producing he has no problem giving a talent young guy a chance to steal the job.

Hey,
It’s not a keeper league…
I just dropped Fowler for Delmon Young cuz Quentin seems to be out with wrist injury…
Any idea on timetable for Browns’ callup?
Also any advice for my trade question?
Thanks
Josh

Josh,
Since it’s not a keeper league I would wait to see what moves the phils make. Brown may not be up until sept unless they trade Werth or Ibanez really tanks. He doesn’t have much more to prove, but phils FO are notorious for not rushing young talent. They are not going to bring him up unless they know he will get regular AB’s, which he won’t if brought up now.

As far as your trade question, I’d say this depends on whether or not your league has a playoff. If so then Strasbourg is less useful since odds are he will be limited in IP and may not pitch much at the end of the season. So he may not give you anything for playoff weeks. Lincecum you know will be giving you quality innings until the end of the season. Since it’s not a keeper league for the rest of the season I would expect better overall number from Lincecum just due to IP.

Thanks for info…we do have a playoff…week 23,24,25. Im currently in 9th…3games out of playoffs. What do you think about riding strasburg til he’s done then just using his skit for PoD in playoffs? Too risky? I’m worried not gonna get enough in return then miss out on playoffs… He would definitely help a lot to get INTO playoffs…
That’s the dilemma…
Thoughts
Thanks
Josh

Josh,

I’d make that Strasburg trade in a second considering it’s a non-keeper H2H league. You’ll be unloading risk (Strasburg) while receiving certainty (Lincecum). Young and Andrus are comparable in value but the SS position is a lot tougher to fill than OF so I’d rather have Elvis.

As for Brown, Mike and Cory are planning on answering your question on today’s show but we should know a whole lot more after the 31st (Werth trade?) But generally speaking, I wouldn’t rush to the wire to grab Brown in a non-keeper. Too many things need to happen for him to receive consistent playing time down the stretch.

Zach

Hey Zach,

Glad to see we agree on the Strasbourg and Brown questions. No props for answering questions during the weekend that you ended up agreeing with? Come on toss Higgs a bone.
