Pitch or Ditch for Tuesday, July 20

Pitch
or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
their
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next guy. The
concept
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
starters,
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
wire
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
“PoD”
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
last
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

Hey guys,
Would you start Hunter or Bush tmrw?
I can only pick one…thanks
Josh

hey guys thanks again for all the help this year

i was considering trying to trade jose reyes, delmon young, and tim hudson for even longeria and robinson cano do u think this is a good deal or do u like hudson and reyes for carpenter i have furcal as my other SS

also i picked up Edinson Volquez what are your thoughts on him for the rest of the year

Hey guys – this is a response to your response to my question yesterday: Would you drop Span, Granderson or Willingham and pick up Scott Rolen or James Loney?

Here are my slots I can play with:
OF Span
OF Willingham
UTIL Granderson
UTIL Andrus

So I could only keep either Loney or Rolen — any reason for concern regarding their injuries? — for the UTIL spot and slide Granderson over to an OF spot. Would you prefer keeping Willingham or Span? I have Andrus in my other UTIL spot, but you wouldn’t drop him, would you? You really think Grandy will wake up?

I need a 1st baseman. Who do you think would be the most productive in runs, rbi’s,etc. and to hold onto for the rest of the season? Choices are Ike Davis, Matt LaPorta, Adam LaRoche or James Loney? I am currently using Mark Reynolds at 1st and Chase Headley at 3rd. Thanks for your time and well needed help.
Al

I finally got someone to bite at Strasburg. After I failed to get a straight up deal for Carpenter, he countered by offering to give me Manny Ramirez and Ricky Romero for Strasburg. It sounds like a good deal to me, right? I’m not sure that I need Manny though. My starting OFs are Crawford, Huff, Hart; my Util is Konerko, and I have Kemp, Willingham, and Ellsbury (DL) on the bench. I could try and ask for either Vernon Wells or Colby Rasmus instead of Manny and Colby Lewis instead of Romero and see how that goes, but I think Romero or Lewis for Strasburg would even be good straight up. What do you think of all of this?

On a related issue, who would you drop to make this deal? I say Willingham.

i’ve been in first for the better part of the season so i’m trying to have a little fun playing around with my team a bit. I’ve been sitting Cain and J. Sanchez for the better part of the past month (which is somewhat understandable) and i knew–from the past few seasons–they’d need to cut down on BBs to have a chance with the hugely inconsistent Giants offense. I’m hoping to just continue to sit these guys until they get out of their slumps.

my question…with Latos on the DL (even though he’ll be back in a week) and Cain and Sanchez struggling, my only big guns are Wainwright and King Felix. Is it worth taking a shot on Bumgarner, Wood, or Oswalt. I’m still not sure if Wood is as good as he’s been or it’s a lucky start but he’s the only one of those 3 pitchers on a team that scores in bunches.

thoughts? thanks guys,
Jared

12 team mixed points league. I’m in first place but I think I need another starter for the stretch run. I’ve got Doc, Ubaldo, C.Lewis, Nolasco, Niese, and Pelfrey. I’m thinking about moving Doc to get 2 good pitchers. Do you agree?
Which of these teams should I target to get 2 starters?

One team has YoGa, Hughes, Price and Cain. Another has Weaver and Buerhle. Another has Felix, Greinke, Buchholz and Big Erv. Another has Lee, CC and Neimann.

As always, your help is appreciated. Keep up the great work on the show.

Hey 411,

Would you do this trade:
Give Marlon Byrd for Buchholz?

Thanks.

Hi Big Z, trying to work out a trade giving up power for speed (picked up A-Ram for corner when a while back so am loaded in pop now). Only problem is its with the first place team, (im 4th), would you still go for it?

Would be something like I get R Davis and G Floyd for C Quentin and M Pelfrey (hope he didn’t see yesterdays start though…). Would that look worthwhile as im getting speed and an upgrade in pitching?

dballer,

That first trade is an absolute no-brainer for you as you’d be getting the two best players in the deal. I wouldn’t do the second trade though.

As for Volquez, I think an ERA in the mid 3′s and about a strikeout per inning are reasonable expectations. He still walks a few too many but he gives up very few hits so his WHIP will still be solid. At the very least, he’ll be a fine mid-rotation guy and is a must-add in pretty much any format.
***********************************************
thrbuddhas,

Now I’m a little concerned about Rolen as a DL trip appears likely, so Loney would be my choice. If you’re already strong in speed, I’d dump Span for Loney. Otherwise, drop Willingham. I still refuse to give up on Granderson.
******************************************
Al,

Of that group, I’d choose LaRoche, who has historically performed exceptionally well across the board post All-Star break. I don’t expect this year to be any different.
******************************************
Glenn,

My preferred package would be Romero and Wells followed by Romero and Rasmus but ultimately I’d take any of those combinations. And yes, drop Willingham.
*******************************************
Jared,

I’d gladly take Oswalt over Sanchez but I still prefer Cain over any one of those available guys. By the way, be careful not to play around too much. As Yogi said, it ain’t over till it’s over. Benching a top flight pitcher like Cain could prove to be a bad move in the long run. You wouldn’t want to miss out on a three-hitter!
******************************************
kristopher,

If you can get Lee and CC, Felix and Greinke or two of Gallardo/Price/Cain for Doc, I’d do it. Otherwise, I think I’d pass.
********************************************
mfridzon,

I usually don’t like to trade a hitter for a pitcher but I’m fine with Byrd for Buchholz. Clay is simply the more valuable player with more upside. He’s slated to start tomorrow’s game in Oakland.
****************************************
Big Barry (I think that’s you?),

That’s an OK deal if you’re stacked in power but I’d first see if I could make a trade with a different team than the first place team. It’s not exactly a great deal so why not explore some other options first before accepting it?

Zach

haha, yeah…i did actually miss Cain’s one hitter earlier in the season. I’ve been trying to cut down on innings so i had been playing match ups and sitting either Cain or Sanchez while they struggled. Cain went from that amazing stretch to an absolutely terrible stretch which i’m still not convinced he’s totally out of. I know Sanchez has said his goal in the second half is to go deeper into games by cutting down on the walks.

and by the way, here’s the last trade offer sent to me from a guy near the bottom of the standings:

This guy offered Rajai Davis, Billy Wagner and Strasburg for Longoria and Miggy Cabrera.

Is it OK to shame him to the rest of the league??

I just recently made some trades on my fantasy. The first trade is Matt Cain for Vicente Padilla. The second one is Ervin Santana for Barry Zito. Now im currently in a division race, are these good trades?

Jared,

In a keeper league, I could maybe rationalize that offer but in a non-keeper, yeah, go ahead and shame him!
***********************************************
baseball4211,

Erv for Zito is a pretty fair swap but Cain for Padilla, I’m sorry to say, is an awful trade for you. Just look at the recent histories of these two pitchers, that is beyond the last few weeks. Cain is a legit fantasy ace who is scuffling a bit while Padilla is a mediocre pitcher who is on a great run. From now until the end of the season, I’ll take Cain 1,000 times out of 1,000.

Zach
