Pitch or Ditch for Wednesday, July 21

or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next guy. The
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

Hey Guys, H2H 10 Team points league

I had been keeping track of E. Volquez comeback from Tommy John surgery all season and think hes going to be great the second half of this season but a couple weeks ago someone swooped up and grabbed him off the FA wire before I could…injuries to my players over the course of the season havent allowed me the opportunity to pick him up and carry him til he was ready.

This guy has wanted Tommy Hanson from me all season but we havent been able to come to agreement on a trade but he floated the idea of Volquez for Hanson.

Hanson has been steady but not great… Is Hanson an innings limit canidate or do you see him becoming even more inconsistent as the innings pile up? ….do yall think thats a trade I should consider?

Thanks for the reply and for the great show and blog

I was wondering if I should add B.J. Upton for Edinson Volquez or Jair Jurrjens. Please let me know as soon as possible.

I’m high on Volquez but still need to see a little more before I’m convinced he’s back to his ’08 form. I still think that Hanson is too high of a price. I see Tommy improving down the stretch and wouldn’t deal him at a discount right now.

Totally depends on your needs. Overall, Upton’s probably the more valuable player but he’s liable to kill your AVG. That said, he’s one of the surest speed options out there.

Hey guys, if you have a chance to pick up one pitcher, would it be Carl Pavano or Josh Beckett? I’m in a 6×6 head to head league. Thanks ahead!

I need some advice. I’ve been lucky in staying in 1st place in a 8 team h2h league since the beginning of the season but I see my team starting to slow down and the other teams are catching up to me. I was offered Texieria for Cano for a straight up trade. Should I take the trade and if I do, who should I get off the waivers for 2nd base, Orlando Hudson or Howard Kendrick. We also have Adam LaRoche or Matt LaPorta for 1st base on the waiver wires. I currently have Mark Reynolds at 1st and Chase Hundley at 3rd.
Thanks for the help. Al

Pavano may be the safer option but I’ll opt for the riskier route and go with Beckett, who is close to returning. When healthy, he’s one of the top pitchers in the game so I’m going with the upside here.

Even though Tex is on a tear of late, I’d pass on that trade. Cano remains the top fantasy second baseman and it’s much harder to find a decent second baseman off the wire than it is to scoop up a productive first baseman. The dropoff from Cano to Hudson/Kendrick is far greater than the one from Tex to LaRoche/LaPorta.

If my outfielders are Carl Crawford, Jose Bautista, Alex Rios, Carlos Gonzalez, Justin Upton, and my utility player is Vlad and my bench players are Troy Tulowitzki, Brian McCann, should I get B.J. Upton Or should i stick with Edinson Volquez when my pitching staff is
Felix Hernandez
Jon Lester
Adam Wainwright
Justin Verlander
Phil Hughes
Cliff Lee
Ryan Dempster
John Danks
Jair Jurrjens
so should i go with Volquez or B.J. Upton.

This just has to be a 6-team league! Honestly, you have such a strong outfield that you likely wouldn’t even be starting B.J., but he’s simply more valuable than Volquez, especially considering that your pitching staff is so strong. Volquez is even more unnecessary than Upton. Go with B.J.

Should i get Swisher or B.J. Upton and yes it is a 6 person league

Swisher…unless you’re desperate for steals.

how bout swisher or shin-soo choo?

Choo and Swisher are very close in value but I’ll say Swisher as I need to see Choo perform well upon his return from injury before recommending him over a guy who has been ultra-consistent all season.
