Pitch or Ditch for Thursday, July 22

or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next guy. The
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

Romero @ Verlander – tough call on Romero, I’ll play it safe

Chen @ Sabathia

Pavano @ Millwood

Weaver @ Lee – matchup of the day!

Lackey @ Rowland-Smith – tough call on Lackey, I’ll gamble vs. weak M’s offense

De La Rosa @ Johnson

Livan @ Volquez

Richard @ T.Hudson Richard slumping badly, maybe fatigued?

Hamels @ Wainwright

Gallardo @ Ohlendorf

Cain @ Lopez

Takahashi @ Kuroda – Mets slumping and Kuroda seemingly back in form

Volquez or Pavano for the spot start tomorrow?

Although I’m definitely excited about Volquez’s potential heading into the season’s stretch run, I’d choose Pavano for tomorrow. He’s simply more proven at this point and has the more favorable matchup. I’d like to see Volquez a few more times before starting him over a guy who has consistently put up exceptional numbers for three and a half months now.

Will JA Happ be a productive and useful SP in the second half? I’ve heard rumblings they’ll call him up to replace Moyer in rotation and he is currently on my fa wire. I do have a bit if a roster problem tho…beckett & choo should be returning from DL this week and I’ll lose my PoD slot. I have Delmon Young to cover for Quentin since he hurt his wrist. Do I drop young and just go with Quentin & Choo? That’ll give me roster spot to pick up Happ.
Let me know what you think.

Currently using Scutaro as SS. Bartlett seems to be getting out of slump. Who has the greater value in the second half?

De La Rosa: Still hurt, or just shaking off the rust?

Also, 411 says don’t chase wins, but I have noticed a phenomenon that usually the fantasy staff with the best ERA and WHIP are not the ones that rank high in wins. The pure definition of irony. A staff can have guys like Matt Cain and Cole Hamels that get no run support, but put up great rate stats. I know change isn’t easily come by, but it makes more sense to replace the Wins category with Quality Starts. I don’t think it will be easy to convince any of my leagues to go in this direction, but owners who draft these pitchers should be rewarded better for it. I lead a league in both ERA and WHIP, yet only have 4 points in Wins, with Josh Johnson, Verlander, Hamels, Floyd (who I picked up right when he got hot), Lester (who I just got for Kershaw about 4 starts ago), Correia, and Hammel.

Hi 411,

5×5 roto keeper where we keep 4 hitters for next year

My hitters are Napoli, Votto, Weeks/Pedroia, Rollins, Wright, J UP, B Up, Swisher, Stanton, Delmon Young, Ellsbury

My Closers are Wood, JEnks, Putz, Meek, J. Gutierrez.

I’ve been offered this deal..

I give up Rollins and Pedroia and get back Tulo and Axford.

Should I accept?

Thanks, I appreciate it

hey guys i currently have kris medlen and im worried he isnt going to be as productive for me in the second half as the firsty because they are watching his innings. dice k gorzanny and mazzaro are still available in my league which of these 3 do u think will be more productive from here on out

Happ might be useful but in your situation I wouldn’t necessarily sacrifice a roster spot to pick him up. There’s also the chance he gets traded in a possible Roy Oswalt deal so we should know a lot more about his role after the 31st. Stand pat for now.

Generally speaking, I’d stick with the more consistent Scutaro but if you’re specifically in need of steals, Bartlett is the better choice. I think he’ll pick it up in that area as he gets on base at a higher rate.

Haven’t heard anything about De La Rosa being hurt so it appears he’s just rusty. Obviously bench him until further notice. As for your comment, that’s exactly why we don’t chase wins! Many leagues do use quality starts instead of wins so it definitely is a growing trent. But quality starts has its problems too as it’s a rather artificial stat. 6 IP 3 ER translates to a 4.50 ERA…not very good.

Thanks for advice…got a Strasburg trade question.
I’d give Strasburg&konerko and get King Felix.
Am I giving up too much? Konerko is on my Utility Spot. I have Choo coming off DL so I can move Delmon Young/ Quentin into that slot.
Other GM said he would throw in boesh to make it 2 for 2 but I’m not sure I would use him anywhere…
What do you think?
Thanks as always

That’s a tough one but I say do the deal. It sounds like you won’t be keeping Rollins anyway and he’s having just an awful season. Pedroia’s exact return date is still unknown while Tulo, still the best player in the trade, is expected back by next week. To top it off, Axford’s closer job is getting safer by the day and you’re pretty weak in saves.

I’m not a huge Dice-K fan but he’d be my choice among that group. Matsuzaka is erratic at times but he’s also the most proven and carries the most upside.

Absolutely do that! You’ve got a number of fine replacements for Konerko and would be getting a legit ace in return for a guy who will be shut down come September. Even without Boesch I like the deal but if the other GM is offering him, sure, why not take him? Even if he doesn’t crack your starting lineup, you can always use him as a trade chip down the road.

Excellent…well I tweaked it a little. I took Felix&Pettite for Strasburg&Konerko.
I can put Pettite on DL for 5-6 weeks then use him rest of way. Meanwhile I can use the slot as PoD.
What do you think of trade?

Sure, why not.
