Pitch or Ditch for Wednesday, August 4

Pitch
or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
their
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next guy. The
concept
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
starters,
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
wire
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
“PoD”
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
last
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

I have Lidge as a 4th closer in a H2H league. Aardsma was just dropped. I’m guessing the owner was worried Aardsma was getting through waivers and would get traded. Should I drop Lidge for Aardsma?

Following up on the mtnman’s comment, what’s your thought on Brandon League for saves? I dropped League in favor of Madson. Thanks!

like i said yesterday i ned Hr Rbi and Avg who do i drop for luke scott

Jorge Cantu
Juan pierre
or
Scott podsendnik
Thanks

mtnman,

Yes, I prefer Aardsma over the maddeningly inconsistent Lidge.
********************************************
whattatrout,

I agree with the move you made. Aardsma has shown some improvement of late and I feel that the chances of the erratic Lidge losing some save chances to Madson are greater than that of League stealing a bunch of saves from Aardsma.

xcode,

I’d normally say to drop Pierre, but since the eventual return of Manny will undoubtedly have a negative effect on Podsednik’s playing time, dump Pods.

In a 10 team mixed league, should i drop Miguel Montero for Mike Napoli or John Buck?

hey guys which guy should i pick up for a pitch and ditch on thursday kevin slowley or wade davis i know they play eachother. which guy do u think is better since they have both been good latley and i would be dropping vin mazzaro to get one. is this a good move or should i stick with mazzaro

I am a huge Twins fan and I would suggest not picking up Slowey. He’s been so inconsistent with his starts. Some starts he’ll go 7 innings and the other 4 or 5 and not get many strikeouts 5 or less usually. I would take Davis over Slowey for Thursday. Don’t let the 10-5 record fool you.

With my only catcher Carlos Santana going on the DL I am in need of a new catcher. I have Chase Utley in my DL spot, so do I drop Santana completely?

The best options on the Waiver wire are Matt Wieters, Miguel Montero and John Buck. Who would be the worthy replacement?

Just pulled off big trade away King Felix for Delmon Young and Jayson Werth. So i be reconsidering or just got away with highway robbery? and who should I replace him with Vicente Padilla, Kris Medlen, Clayton Richard, or look 2 a high ranked bullpen guy like Gregerson or Putz, or any1 esle not owned in alot of leagues. And thanks 4 the help

Regarding my previous question on August 2nd, what should I do to improve areas that I’m weak in? I’ll list possible FAs that can replace my current guys, and I would like you to tell me if I should keep what I have, add one of the FA’s, or try for a trade. What are your thoughts about keeping Madison Bumgarner, Jonathan Niese and Travis Wood for the rest of the season? On the waiver wire, I have a chance to pick up Brett Myers, Ricky Romero, Chad Billingsley or Jorge De La Rosa. Of all these pitchers, which 3 should I keep (for the rest of the season)?
As for 1st base, I am using Mark Reynolds at 1st, Chase Headley at 3rd and Aubrey Huff as DH. I want to move Mark to 3rd base and Huff to 1st base. For 1st base, there is Gabe Sanchez, Logan Morrison and Ike Davis available and Matt Joyce available for DH. Who should I be looking at to pickup? I only have 15 more pickups left in my league (for the season).Thank for the help and sorry for the long letter. Al

(I realized that when I posted this the first time, it looked like a giant block of text, so I tried to break it up better).

Carlos Santana got hurt and I need to replace him. Looking to pick up Torrealba. DL spot filled with Victorino. Who should I drop to pick up Torrealba?

Beltran
Ethier
Padilla
Scherzer
Carlos Santana

Ethier and Beltran have been on my bench while they have been stinking it up. I am leaning to dropping Scherzer or Padilla because I already have Jimenez, Halladay, Sabathia, and Beckett.

Ok gentlemen,
Catastrophe has struck my team and possibly my playoff chances.
I now have C Santana, R Howard, I Kinsler, & K Youkilis all on the DL!!
I traded Quentin for Butler so hopefully that helps a little.
I dropped C Santana and picked up Buck for now…
I have been offered M Young for Felix or Beckett..
Also offered Huff for Felix…
Should I hold out for better deal? I don’t want to do a trade if I’m giving up too much!!
my current rotation is :
Lester, King Felix, Beckett, Hanson, Floyd, Kuroda & Pettite (hopefully coming off DL next week)
Would it be smart to make trade regardless? What do you think of offers I’ve received so far.
Which of these SP would you give up for Wright? I’m trying to get him & GM wants Felix and wants more…is c young&felix too much for wright?
Any news on when Kinsler will be back? That’ll give me a little more flexibility.
Thanks for all advice this year but this advice will go a long way to determine my playoff chances…(no pressure! Haha)
Josh

additional thought…would you do c young & Hanson for Huff?
Thanks
Josh

With Carlos Santana going down, are there any promising young catchers soon to be promoted to the show? I’m not so excited about the crop of available catchers below…any thoughts would be appreciated…problem is none really get many at bats!

John Jaso
Jason Kendall
Ronny Paulino
Carlos Ruiz
Nick Hundley
Chris Iannetta
George Kottaras

Tim,

Yeah, I’d go ahead and drop Montero for Napoli. Napoli is streaky in the AVG department but his power is legit. I think Buck’s AVG is due to go way down as his current .279 AVG is significantly higher than his career .241 mark.
********************************************
dballer,

Davis is the clear choice. He’s been outstanding over his last four starts while Slowey has been wildly inconsistent all season. Davis is also on the better team with the better supporting lineup.
******************************************
Gryff,

I’d rather you wait a few days before dropping Santana until we know more about his injury, but if you’d like to make a move right now I think Montero’s the best choice due to his ability to help you in both the AVG and power departments.
*******************************************
Jon,

Not a highway robbery but a very solid deal nonetheless. Of that SP group, I like Richard the most but would ultimately use the roster spot for pitch or ditch.
******************************************
Glenn,

Here are my thoughts:

C: Pick up the red-hot Torrealba
1B: I like LaRoche
2B: I’m fine with who you have but would try to add Johnson anyway
3B: Stand pat
SS: Hold onto Andrus for his SBs but the surging Alexei makes for a tempting pickup
OF: Again, I like your guys, though there are plenty of quality waiver wire options, most notably Pence, Rasmus and Pagan
SP: I’d drop Kuroda for Lilly
RP: Pick up at least one more closer and maybe even two. I’m shocked that all those guys are available. Axford, Perez and Aardsma (in that order) are definitely worth owning.
*********************************************
Ron,

Padilla’s definitely the guy to drop. His track record of mediocrity simply doesn’t support what he’s doing right now. I think a major stat correction (in other words, a number of blowups) could be in store.
****************************************
Josh,

Felix and CBY for Wright is fair but you are giving up a lot of value there. I prefer the Beckett for M. Young deal and would go ahead with doing that one.

Zach

ok guys i have the number 1 waiver priority and Hanrahan hit the wire. i could use a 3rd closer but would have to use my waivier and drop either asdrubal, brian roberts, tabata, kendrick or sandoval. one of the second baseman seem logical but i feel the priority might be too valuable to use it on a guy that hasn’t officially been given the closer job. thoughts?

thanks,
jeff in cleveland

Thanks for advice Zach,
What do you think of Huff deal I was offered? I’d get Huff and give up T Hanson & CBY.
I’d have Huff as Utility and OF rotation of DY (minn), Rios, & Choo…Butler for 1B til Howard comes back then Utility rotation..
Is Huff gonna keep his torrid pace up or go back to journeyman?
Thanks
Josh

Thanks for the advice…Once again
Josh

Thanks for the help Zach,

I added Torrealba and Lilly for Santana and Kuroda, but now I’m at a point where I have to make decisions on who to keep and who to drop in order to do some of the stuff you recommended. I was thinking of dropping Kouzmanoff, moving McGehee to 3B and placing Roberts in 2B to free of my Util spot. I also considered dropping Ellsbury since Howard is occupying the only DL slot I have and Ellsbury would free up a Bench spot. Would you agree with this plan? If so, then which 2 players from that list should I add? One these players will be in the Util role and the other on the Bench as needed. Kelly Johnson, Pagan, Pence, Rasmus, LaRoche, Alexei Ramirez.

Consider this also in addition: Would you advocate dropping or benching (if possible) Konerko for LaRoche; Roberts for Johnson; Andrus for Alexei; Wells or Hart for any of those OFs; or Jenks, Romero, Hanson or Niemann for Axford, Chris Perez or Aardsma? Right now, my bench consists of Ellsbury (wasting away on the DL), Kemp (struggling yet undroppable according to league rules), Hart (starting OF is Crawford, Huff, and Wells with Roberts in Util), Hanson and Romero. I want to be able to have good guys available on the bench in case one of my starters gets cold like Kemp and I can just put in whoever is red-hot. It’s seems really difficult to win a league when your best guys cool off down the stretch and you have no one to back them up. I really appreciate all the help.

Glenn–NY

Al,

The pitchers you already own are all solid options but I’m shocked as to the quality of talent that’s available on the wire in this league. Based mostly on track record, I’d cut all three of your pitchers in order to pick up Myers, Romero and Billingsley. I simply see them as safer choices.

I’ll rank those 1Bs Sanchez, Davis, Morrison but all three have mixed league value.
*********************************************
Josh,

Definite No on CBY and Hanson for Huff. CBY alone for Huff would be fair. No need to throw in a high-end pitcher like Hanson.

Zach

Ray,

Of that group, I’d lean towards Ruiz. He’s the clear-cut starting catcher in Philly and has performed well, most notably in the AVG department since coming off the DL just before the All-Star break.
***********************************************
Jeff,

I have no problem with you using your #1 waiver priority on Hanrahan, especially if you feel that you can gain some ground in saves. Hanrahan has, for the most part, been lights out this season and will now get a legit opportunity to earn the closer job for good. We’ve seen him crumble in the ninth inning role before, but last night was a promising sign. At this point in the season, it’s very hard to find true difference makers off the wire, so who are you saving the top waiver priority for? Go ahead and use it.

Zach

thanks zach. so of the players at the bottom of my team all “could” help if they did what they should. none of them have thus far so i need to pick one that is least likely to bounce back. pablo, brian roberts, asdrubal or tabata. tabata has been the hottest but seems like an easy choice. pablo isn’t doing much period and roberts and asdrubal are coming off injuries. in a vacuum who do you drop?

jeff

Glenn,

Well, now that Ellsbury is back you obviously don’t want to drop him! I’m fine with you dumping Kouz in favor of one of those free agents. All of them are worthy pickups so the choice largely depends on which categories you need the most help in, but overall, I like LaRoche due to his history of putting up monster second halves. As for the lineup changes, I’d consider dropping the erratic Jenks for Axford or possibly even Perez, but that’s the only change I would make.
*****************************************
Jeff,

I’d actually drop Asdrubal. Tabata’s been producing on a consistent basis since getting called up while Asdrubal has yet to get it going since coming off the DL. We always say that at this point in the season, you have to place more importance on results than on names. This situation is a great example.

Zach
