Pitch or Ditch for Saturday-Monday, August 7-9

Pitch
or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
their
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next guy. The
concept
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
starters,
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
wire
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
“PoD”
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
last
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

two trades Pedroia for kinsler and longoria for fielder.
h2h pionts.
Who wins these trades?
Worried about Kinsler I know they are both on the DL but I have more confidence in Pedroia. What do you think?
Thanks guys

Would you make the switch from Butler to Adam LaRoche? I’m waiting for Howard to get back..Unfortunately I did trade Quentin for Butler but he’s done nothing for me…what divyou think?
Thanks Josh

Hey Big Z, currently having a torrid time at MI, with Escobar not working out and Pedroia stuck on the DL. Playing Brignac and Peralta at 2B and MI atm but fed up with the lack of production from both of them so wanna try some other guys. Any ideas of some under the radar MI’s who could provide value (currently need mainly runs and AV)?

Injuries are killing me… I lost Santana and have Yorvit at C. Should I trade Stras for Mauer?

Pitchers: Stras, Garcia, Latos, Oswalt, Hanson, Jurrjens, Wood, Niese, Bumgarner, D Hudson.

Yorvit, Fielder, Cano, Tulo, Zimmerman, J Upton, Quentin, Cuddyer, Granderson, Andrus, Ludwick, Utley

12 team league. I’m in 2nd and fighting for a playoff bye.

The trade deadline is coming up in my league, and I’m looking to take advantage of some possible last minute deals. I lost a lot of power when Howard went on the DL, and my offense’s AVG and OPS have plummeted which has also negatively affected the other offense stats. Plus, my pitching’s ERA and WHIP have shot up, so I could use help across the board. Here are 2 trade offers I received. One involves me giving Hanson and getting Zobrist. I’m not sure this is what I need, but this next offer seems enticing. I would get Halladay for Kemp and Kershaw. Kemp has been struggling at the plate of late, so much so that he’s sitting on my bench yet unable to be dropped. I have plenty of OFs as it is (Crawford, Huff, Hart, Rasmus, Ellsbury, Wells) and I think Halladay will be an improvement over Kershaw. What do you think? I could try countering with Lilly, Niemann, Romero, or Hanson instead of Kershaw, but I feel like this will be a deal breaker unless I offer a hotter OF. What’s your opinion on all of this?

Glenn–NY

Follow up question. If I go through with the Halladay/Kemp, Kershaw deal, which FA should I add? Aramis Ramirez, Curtis Granderson, Raul Ibanez, Jason Bartlett, Ian Stewart, Chipper Jones, Stephen Drew, Rajai Davis, David Murphy, Jack Cust, Edwin Encarnacion, Ty Wigginton, Will Venable, Carlos Ruiz, Chris Johnson, Chris Denorfia, Pedro Alvarez, Tyler Clovin, Garrett Jones, Andruw Jones, Josh Willingham, Kevin Kouzmanoff, James Loney, Jonny Gomes, Cody Ross, Gaby Sanchez

Glenn–NY

Should I trade Vlad for Torii or Cliff Lee?? I need some pitching and i have good depth at outfield and im in first place in a H2H 10 Team league.

Thanks

I MUST keep repeating the 411 rules!!!! Better to miss a good start than risk a terrible one!!! Regret the results, but not the decision!!! Well, I guess it’s actually my fault for going against the experts’ P or D recommendations….but Saturday’s slugfest in Toronto scared me away. Yes, guys, I had Brandon Morrow on my STUPID FREAKIN’ BENCH!!! Ironically, I also moved into first place Sunday. Strange game this is. I’m in a 3 way dogfight for my three peat, and hopefully this Morrow start doesn’t end up being the difference between winning and either 2nd or 3rd place. I’ll start Morrow next time, and he will get shelled no doubt.

Greg in Cincy

Would you guys drop either J.Garcia or Volquez and pick up Padilla? I’m worried a little Garcias innings and Volquez has been a bit erratic since coming back. Thanks

Hey there,

20 team h2h dynasty league. 40 man rosters. Extremely deep practically nothing on the waiver wire. I am having a great year and trying to win now. A team that is out of it this year but clearly is one year away has offered Jose Bautista and Arod for Youkilis and Jose Bautista. I really don’t trust Bautista for next year and tried to put someone else in the deal but he would’nt budge from that offer. Should I do this or try hold out for better value? Our league uses K’s for hitter, TB, obp, slg in addition to the regular 5 hitting cats.

Sorry my bad. The offer was Arod and Bautista for Youkilis and SIZEMORE. Sorry I got confused.

sdoty,

Yeah, I’d definitely take Pedroia over Kinsler. Sounds like Pedroia will be back within the next couple of weeks and while Kinsler might return a bit sooner, his long history of injuries is concerning. All things equal, Kinsler’s probably the better fantasy player, but Pedroia is the safer choice for the rest of this season.

As for Longoria vs. Fielder, it’s close considering that Prince is absolutely on fire right now. But unless you’re in desperate need for homers, I’d still lean towards Longoria due to both his five-category production and the position scarcity factor.
***********************************************
Josh,

I’m fine with you swapping in LaRoche for Butler. Billy will likely hit for the higher AVG from here on out but LaRoche is the superior power option. The Diamondbacks’ lineup is a lot better than that of the Royals and Chase Field is an extreme hitters’ park. Not to mention that LaRoche, historically a second half monster, is flat out raking so far in August (14-for-32 4 HR 9 RBI).
********************************************
Big Barry,

I too am a Pedroia owner and have come to realize just how hard it is to find productive MIs off the wire. One guy who immediately comes to mind is J.J. Hardy. He’s been red hot of late and is currently owned in just 10 percent of Yahoo leagues. Jayson Nix and Alcides Escobar are also worth considering.
***************************************
Andrew,

Yes! Immediately! Strasburg might only make a few more starts before the Nats decide to shut him down, so obtaining an elite catcher for him is a flat out steal.

Zach

Should I trade Chris Carpenter for Starlin Castro and Mike Adams? I have mediocre pitchers ( Carp, Latos, Cain, Leake, DeLaRosa, Kuroda, and Dickey ) and Furcal is my only SS. I do need relief help ( Gregg, Gregerson, and Capps).

Glenn,

Just a few months ago, I would’ve said to go ahead with the Hanson for Zobrist deal. But Zobrist has been major disappointment in the power department so he won’t help you much. As for the other trade offer, I think that Kemp is simply too high a price to pay for the upgrade from Kershaw to Halladay, Try making a counteroffer using one of those other pitchers and if that doesn’t work, move on. You’ve got plenty of valuable assets so I find it hard to believe that you wouldn’t be able to pull of a trade with another team. I don’t like the idea of selling low on Kemp, who could catch fire at any moment. There’s a reason he was a consensus first round pick. Even in a down year, he’s on pace for roughly 25-25.
***********************************************
xanderayash,

Vlad for Cliff Lee is certainly a reasonable trade. Given your needs, it makes a lot of sense.
**************************************
Greg,

I’m sure plenty of people made the same decision you did, so I wouldn’t feel too bad about it. Hey, I benched Dallas Braden for his perfect game and am still kicking myself for sitting Baker for his last start. Stuck with him throughout the season and the first time I finally give in to benching him what does he do? He throws his best game of the year. I can go on and on. We all have those stories!

Zach

dblbogey,

Padilla’s bound to fall off at some point but for now, sure, go ahead and drop Volquez and pick up Vicente. Volquez has been walking way too many batters for him to maintain a respectable ERA. I don’t think we’ll see the vintage Edinson until 2011.
******************************************
Tzvi,

Yup, I’d make that deal to try to win now. You’re giving up absolutely nothing in the short-term (Youk and Grady both done for the year). Worry about the future later.
*****************************************
mansam,

You’ve got to be kidding…Any rotation led by Carpenter, Cain and Latos is far from mediocre. Castro is a slightly above average MI and Adams, despite his solid season, carries limited fantasy value in a non-holds league (he won’t be saving any games). I have no idea why you’re even considering this.

Zach

With Prado and Howard on DL, I picked up 2B Infante and Util Podsednik. The rest of my offense is C McCann, 1B Cabrera(Det.), 3B Longoria,SS Scutaro, OF Swisher, OF Young (Ari), OF Huff.
My “O” is suffering a little with Longoria, slumping in ERA. Everyone pitching around Cabrera. The combo of injuries and slumps is worrying me.
Any person I should look at with low ownership that can help more thru the lean times?

litlnubs,

It’s hard to say without knowing your specific category/positional needs but I wouldn’t be too worried about Longoria slumping. He’s an elite player and elite players (hitters specifically) tend to always finish with elite-level numbers. I’d simply sort the available player pool by RBIs/HRs etc. either for the whole season or the last 15/30 days to find someone who fits your needs.

Zach
