Pitch or Ditch for Tuesday, August 10

or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next guy. The
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

Hey guys,
do you consider Kuroda worth keeping on staff or use his spot for PoD? With injuries PoD has gone out the window…I face a team this week that already has more starts than me for the week and he uses a similar concept to PoD. Rest of my rotation is Lester, Felix, Hanson, Beckett, Pettite & Floyd.
Appreciate the help,

i noticed you guys arent pitching c.j. wilson and i was debating only because the yanks seem to hit righties better than lefties. anyways if i am always debating wilson is it better to just cut him loose and use the spot for POD or an extra bat. if i drop him he’ll get scooped up right away. best arms on the wire are leblanc, volquez (just dropped), hunter (just dropped). so i wont be grabbing any studs. it will be hot matchup. i’m in first but its very close. i don’t want to give up my era and whip leads but continually sitting wilson- my k’s and wins will suffer. decisions decisions. also with wilson being converted to a starter is there any chance they limit his innings or maybe he is tiring and thats the cause of his past few starts.

thanks as always,

Niemann just hit the DL. Who would you add Morrow in his place? Is that 17K near no-hitter a fluke or Morrow’s true potential? If not Morrow, then who else from this list would you add? Kuroda, Bumgarner, Ian Kennedy, Jason Vargas, Tommy Hunter, Chris Perez, Volquez, or Carmona.

Kuroda, Kennedy, and Carmona have killed me all season. I’m a rookie at this, but I would go with Hunter. Vargas is hot too, and both are in a weak division, but Hunter’s on the stronger team.

Hi guys,
looking 4 an SP upgrade, have Daniel Hudson, should I pick up Minor or Hellikson to replace him? Non kpr, 12tm, mxd.
THX again!!

I’d really try to hold onto Kuroda. Can’t you open up a PoD spot by cutting a bench hitter? But if your only choice is to drop Kuroda, you definitely have a strong enough staff to afford it.

Considering the mediocre quality of waiver wire pitchers, I’d keep Wilson around for at least a little longer. An innings limit is possible should the Rangers maintain their comfortable lead in the AL West but that’s something to think about in mid-September, not mid-August.

If you need Ks, Morrow’s your guy, but he’s still been a bit inconsistent from start to start. Of the starting pitchers available, Kuroda’s probably the safest but I’d actually pick up Perez if you feel that you can gain some points in saves. There are a finite number of closers and picking up one of them will not only help you in saves but also prevent another owner from making up ground in that category. You can always pitch or ditch with starters to keep up in wins and strikeouts.

Hellickson is a tempting pickup but if adding him means that you’d be dropping Hudson, I’d lean towards standing pat being that it’s a non-keeper. Hudson has been solid and unlike Hellickson, is guaranteed a rotation spot through the end of the season. It sounds like the injuries to Davis and Niemann are not too serious, so Hellickson’s time in the rotation might be short-lived.

The only hitters I have on my bench are Kinsler & Howard…every other roster spot was taken to plug holes all throughout my infield. The only option I can see to create PoD would be to drop a SP…
I think I’m going to try to hold til Kuroda makes his start this week, Friday, and re-evaluate for w/e…it’ll at least give me 2 more starts…hopefully not getting crushed by then.
Other ideas?
