Pitch or Ditch for Thursday, August 12

Pitch
or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
their
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next day. The
concept
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
starters,
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
wire
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
“PoD”
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
last
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

CORY’S PICKS

Lackey @ Mills – I don’t trust Lackey anymore.
Millwood @ J.Gomez
Liriano @ Floyd
Sabathia @ Chen
Hammel @ J. Santana – Hammel had a nice run but has cooled lately
Lopez @ Wolf
Wells @ Cain – Still a believer in Wells
Duke @ Garland – OK on Garland at home vs. Pirates
Nolasco @ Livan – Still a believer in Nolasco
Kershaw @ Blanton

***Siano says “Agreed. Lackey still has AL-only value but he’s risky in mixed leagues. The Mariners and A’s would be nice but alas he went to the beast.”

Hey crew, how would you rank these three guys the rest of the way based solely upon era and whip: Romero, B Anderson, Erv Santana. Thanks!

Adam,

I’d go Anderson, Erv, Romero (AL East factor…Blue Jays will see a lot of the Yankees, Rays and Red Sox down the stretch).

Ok guys,
I’m wondering what you think about this: I want to drop kinsler and make his spot into PoD.
It’s still up in air about when he comes back, possibly not until Sept 1st, and also who knows how he’ll be when he comes back. The big upside for him this year was avg & speed but w/hammy that’s seems to eliminate one.
The PoD slot would help me tremendously THIS week and next especially. Keppinger has been solid and some nights even spectacular,
What do you think?
Thanks,
Josh

Josh,

Not a crazy thought but I have a general rule against dropping elite players unless they are definitively ruled out for the season. Even if Kinsler comes back Sept. 1, that’s plenty of time for him to make a positive (or possibly even tremendous) impact on your team. I’d look hard to find an alternate way to open up a PoD spot. Cutting Kinsler is too risky.
