Pitch or Ditch for Friday, August 13

Pitch
or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
their
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next day. The
concept
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
starters,
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
wire
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
“PoD”
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
last
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

*Gonzalez is very risky here but brings big
K’s. I’m very on the fence.

Saunders @

Johnson @ Volquez *Which Volquez shows up? You know? I
don’t.

Hamels @ Dickey *Dickey a high risk medium
reward.

Kuroda @ T.

Ohlendorf @
Myers *Myers has been just
wow.

Diamond @
Westbrook

Gallardo @ De La

Richard @ J.

***Cory saysSome
disagreements here! Ditch Carmona and Shields, both awful in the 2nd half. Pitch
Guthrie vs. erratic Rays. He’s having an awesome 2nd half. Only pitch Buehrle if
chasing wins and can risk the ratios. Not loving DLR or Richard, but I’ll get
on board with Siano for now.”

Pitch or Ditch has another benefit. One of my leagues I screwed up in the draft and didn’t have enough SP. I didn’t realize how bad (took me a while to figure out where ESPN hides the limits, first time playing there) it was, I was projecting being over 500 IP short. The last month I’ve been PoDing like a crazy person, and today I’m only projecting ~140 IP. And–surprise surprise–I’ve moved up in the standings from 8th/9th to 5th/6th. There are some big gaps to reach higher than 5th, but I’ll keep trying!–Jeanne from Hollywood, 411 Hall of Famer

Hey Guys,

I am chasing Wins right now and am in good position to move up a couple points if I can grab some. My quandry is that I am getting up there in my innings pitched (about 27 over recommended at this point). I becket slated for today. Is this matchup a good use of my innings? I also am chasing saves and have a number of closers to use some of my innings. Thoughts?

Thanks,

Vande

Vande,

27 over right now isn’t all that bad, so I wouldn’t be too concerned about the innings limit. You’ll notice that the projections tend to be on the high end and they bottom out as the season winds down. Now I’m not saying to be reckless, but pitch your best guys. That said, I’m very leery of Beckett @ TEX. The Rangers are a dangerous lineup to face, especially in that ballpark, so I’d play it safe and sit this one out.
