Pitch or Ditch for Tuesday, August 17

Pitch
or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
their
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next day. The
concept
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
starters,
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
wire
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
“PoD”
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
last
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

Boys –

Pick the 10 arms I should go with for this week:

Bell, Heath RP SD @CHC (4) @MIL (3)
Garcia, Jaime SP STL MIL (and maybe SF)
Garza, Matt SP TB TEX and @OAK
Gorzelanny, Tom SP CHC SD and ATL
Hellickson, Jeremy SP TB @OAK
Hudson, Daniel SP ARI CIN and COL
Hughes, Phil SP NYY DET
Hunter, Tommy SP TEX @TB and @BAL
Kershaw, Clayton SP LA COL and CIN
Volquez, Edinson SP CIN @ARI
*************************
Bailey, Andrew RP OAK DL? maybe TOR (3) and TB (4)
Cahill, Trevor SP OAK TB
Davis, Wade SP TB DL
Gonzalez, Gio SP OAK TOR
Sanchez, Jonathan SP SF @PHI
Valverde, Jose RP DET Injured? maybe @NYY (4) CLE (3)
Wilson, C.J. RP TEX @BAL

I listed the first 10 of what I am thinking to go with (1 CL and 9 SP)….should I change it? I am 1 back in Saves, but have more chance to pick up points in K, WHIP, W’s (dont chase them though :-) )

P.S. I am leading ERA (3.355) with next closest at (3.587). Mixed, NK 10×10 roto.

thanks –

through the end of the year, Lowell or LaPorta?

BDH,

I agree with everything except I’d swap in Wilson for Volquez, who’s been very erratic since coming off the DL. Wilson has, on the whole, pitched consistently well this year. Also, the D-Backs are a tough lineup to face in Arizona.

Zach –

Hmmmm…interesting….I was worried about Wilson vs. BAL only cause the last time he faced them it wasnt pretty, and historically Volquez has been favorable vs. ARI….but can swap.

thanks for the 2 cents….much appreciated to have the extra set of eyes on this week.

Hey guys,

I noticed in my league that K-Rod and Valverde are both on the Waivers List. Would it be a good idea to pick up one or both and drop some of the closers I already have? I have Brian Wilson, Axford, and Chris Perez. I don’t have a pressing need for closers, but I’m looking at possibly preventing someone else from getting these players. What are your thoughts? Also, how much would be an appropriate bid for each? We all started off with $100 to bid with and the highest bid wins when a player comes off the list. I still have $99.

Well, I just got my answer about K-Rod. Season ending surgery on his thumb because of his stupid altercation with his father-in-law. HOW STUPID!!!! The next step would be for the Mets to void his contract. As a Mets fan upset by the whole affair, I would actually welcome his departure. My original question still stands however, regarding Valverde and his value compared to Wilson, Axford and Perez.

Hey Guys,
Have an OF spot on my roster after Cruz went to DL.
David Murphy and Ryan Raburn are available. Who’d you pick?
Thanks!!!

H2H 12X12 W/15-15 batting & pitching cat’s. Pitching stats favor starters & closers, but there is one cat for HOLDS. It is also an 8 player keeper league. I would really appreciate opinions on the 8 keepers. The roster;
Miguel Montero (Ari – C),
Miguel Cabrera (Det – 1B),
Kelly Johnson (Ari – 2B),
Ian Desmond (Was – 2B,SS),
Pedro Alvarez (Pit – 3B),
Prince Fielder (Mil – 1B),
Brett Wallace (Hou – 1B,3B),
Matt Holliday (StL – LF),
Josh Hamilton (Tex – LF,CF,RF),
Mike Stanton (Fla – RF),
Ryan Raburn (Det – 1B,2B,LF,CF,RF),
Ike Davis (NYM – 1B),
Buster Posey (SF C,1B),
J.P. Arencibia (TOR -C),

***PITCHERS**>SP’S – Colby Lewis,
R.A. Dickey,
Brett Myers,
C.J. Wilson,
Tommy Hanson,
Stephen Strasburg,
Ricky Romero,
Jeremy Hellickson,
Brian Duensing,
Madison Bumgarner,
Josh Tomlin,

***RP’s>> Neftali Feliz,
Huston Street,
John Axford,
David Aardsma.

What 8 do you like? Thanks in advance to all who comment. This fantasy thing is just off the hook!

Hey g7fighter@optonline

Right now I say Ryan Raburn, Magglio Ordonez has an ankle injury, Rayburn is now a starter & batting .326 for August with 4 homers. Last I checked David Murphy has STILL not been named a starter, though he was getting the majority of the playing time over Julio Borbon. Hope that helps.

J.Gomez is not a fluke yet, wait until he plays an offensive minded team, then POD.

Hey g7fighter@optonline

Change up, Rangers web site depth chart is showing Murphy as RF starter, if that’s the case then I think Murph is the better stick, He has 3 August HR’s & a higher BA.

Glenn,

Despite last night’s rocky outing, I’d definitely pick up Valverde. He’s a slight injury risk right now as we’re not quite sure that he’s 100 percent recovered from his abdominal strain, but a player of his caliber simply does not belong on the waiver wire. As for who to drop, do you really need to cut a closer? I’d look for someone else to drop. There’s nothing wrong with owning as many closers as possible. At this point in the season, I wouldn’t be too conservative in my spending. A bid of about 60-70 bucks is reasonable.

mfridzon,

Both players have been hot but I’d go with Murphy. With Nelson Cruz now back on the DL, playing time shouldn’t be an issue at all and I think Murphy has a little more across-the-board upside than Raburn.

evilempire,

Here’s my 8: Cabrera, Fielder, Hamilton, Stanton, Holliday, Posey, Strasburg, Hanson.
