Pitch or Ditch for Wednesday, August 18

Pitch
or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
their
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next day. The
concept
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
starters,
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
wire
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
“PoD”
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
last
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

I?m in a 10 team 6 (OBP) x 7 (batting average against, holds) head to head 9 keeper league. I?ve got Pedroia, Utley, and Howard (hopefully) returning this week. I need to cut one player from David Ortiz, Adam LaRoche, Zobrist, Torres, Quentin, and Rollins to make room. I?ve got a pretty balanced offense except I?ve been hurting in batting average and OBP all year. I?m leaning toward cutting LaRoche, but he?s been on fire lately and is a strong second half player. Thoughts? Thanks, Damon in Seattle

I have Cain, Dickey, and Kuroda pitching tomorrow. Would prefer to only pitch two of them. Do you think it should be Cain and Dickey?

I got a Good news, Bad news situation; Chase Utley is coming off the DL, but I have alot of gotten alot of good pitchers over his time on the DL. Who should I cut?
Jason Vargas, Phil Hughes, Barry Zito, C.J. Wilson, Carl Pavano, Trevor Cahill, Brett Myers, and do you think Hong-Chih Kuo is getting another chance for the temp. closer spot?
Jon from Texas

Damon,

My preference would be for you to drop someone else (maybe a pitcher?) as all of those guys definitely deserve a roster spot. But if I had to choose one to cut it would actually be Zobrist, unless you need him for his MI eligibility or you don’t have many other viable SB options. Zobrist has been ice cold since the beginning of July and he’s not hitting for any power. If you’d rather not cut Zobrist, my second choice would be Quentin. Yeah, he’s hitting a lot of homers but his AVG is dreadful and you mentioned that AVG is your main weakness. LaRoche is on fire right now and he’s a proven second half performer. It wouldn’t shock me at all if he outproduces Quentin from here on out.

mansam,

Yep, Cain and Dickey would be the way I’d go. Tough to bench Kuroda right now but the Rockies’ lineup is far superior to that of the Astros.

Zach

Thanks for the feedback. My pitching staff is pretty strong (Lester, Hanson, Latos, Hamels, Mo Rivera, Papelbon, Valverde, Marmol, Bard, Thornton, and Sean Marshall) so I’m not sure I want to cut any of these guys. We start 9 pitchers in any combination, and since we use Holds my middle relievers have good value. Also, we have 3 bench slots and I like to use a couple on pitchers in the playoffs, so if I don’t cut one of my hitters I’ll be eating up 2 bench slots on hitters. I don’t need the MI eligibility of Zobrist (he’s either an outfielder or utility on my team), so he may be the one to go. I tried trading him before my league’s deadline but couldn’t get any takers. Thanks again, Damon in Seattle

Zach,

Regarding my last question, I don’t have much leeway on my bench to pick up Valverde without dropping a closer like Axford or Perez. My bench consists of Huff, Kemp, Howard (DL), Ellsbury (DL slot), Axford, and Romero. I could try dropping Ellsbury and move Howard into the DL slot, but when Howard comes off someone else will have to be dropped anyway. The only other people I could envision dropping would be 2 of my starting OF of Rasmus and Stanton, but Stanton has caught fire and Rasmus is in for the cooled off Huff and low batting AVG Kemp. What are your thoughts on all of this?

Glenn–NY

Hey guys, Prado came of the DL today and I thought he may need a few games before I worked him back into my lineup but he looks to be ready to go. He’s eligible at 1B, 2B, and 3B in my league. He’s been at UTIL most of the year with Kinsler at 2B, but with several guys on the DL recently that were worth hanging on thru their DL stint, I have more players than I know what to do. At 1B I have Luke Scott who I grabbed off waivers about a week ago, 2B I have Theriot who I picked up when both Prado and Kinsler went down, and 3B is Zimmerman who’s clearly not going anywhere. My UTIL is used by one of my OF’s (Kemp, Choo, Rios, Podsednik, Rasmus). So of all the players I listed, who (if anyone) gets benched in favor of Prado? I’m also trying to work a trade somewhere that would be me giving up 2 guys for 1 but that’s proving difficult. Thanks for any input!

In a 16 team 5×5 rotisserie league. Fighting to stay in fourth which is the last money spot in the league. James Shields is about as DTM as anyone can be. Should I dump him for the likes of Bud Norris or Wade LeBlanc at this point. Those two look like they could be more productive as the rest of the season plays out. It’s all about finishing as high as I can so am I too months too late in dumping him or should I hold for good matchups? Rest of my staff includes Cliff Lee, Clayton Kershaw, Phil Hughes, Max Scherzer, Brett Cecil, Barry Enright, Billy Wagner, Kevin Gregg and Andrew Bailey. Need the closers to ensure that I don’t get murdered in saves. Thanks for any and all help!

Fireman Frank

hey guys i currently have pettitte on my DL i also have furcal sitting on my bench on the DL. i was thinking about dropping one of these guys and having the other one on my DL slot.which one would u drop and why. i was thinking about adding a guy to my 2nd/ss spot. players available to me are wiggington, infante, hill, drew, and stewart which one should i add and why. our playoffs start on the sept 6th and championship week beginning sept 13th (will pettitte be back by then)

Hey guys. In one of my CBS point leagues, I have D.Young, Kemp, J.Upton, Hart and Cruz in my OF. We only start 3 and my Util spot is taken. Torres is a free agent and he’s outscored all my guys except Young and hart is close behind. Kemp and Upton are so undependable and Cruz can’t stay on the field. Should I drop one of those guys and pick up Torres? I know as soon as I do the one I drop will go off and someone else will pick him up, but I need some help. I’m also a little worried about Torres losing a bit of playing time to Guillen, especially if he heats up. What do I do? Thanks

Jon,

Tough call as all of those guys are enjoying stellar seasons. I’d lean towards cutting Vargas due to the combination of a thin track record, low K rate and weak supporting lineup. As for Kuo, I think he’ll get at least one more save chance but with Dotel looming as a viable alternative, he has a very short leash. Also, don’t be surprised if Broxton reclaims the role soon should he strink together a few more clean innings.

Glenn,

As much as it pains me to say it, pass on Valverde then. He’s been shaky lately and there’s talk that he could be hiding an injury. The way Perez and Axford have been pitching you can’t drop them. I like the defensive strategy but it looks like it’ll be too difficult to implement in this situation.
******************************************
craigslist,

Drop Theriot then, particularly if you don’t need his steals. Speed is really the only area where Theriot has the edge over Prado and I love Prado’s positional flexibility.

Fireman Frank,

It’s awfully tempting to dump Shields but I don’t really trust Norris or LeBlanc just yet. For now, I’d hold onto Shields and try to spot-start him in favorable matchups. My opinion could change soon, however!

Zach

Things are really getting critical. I ‘ve been riding 1st place in my league mostly due to my hitting side, but it’s tightening up alot. 14 team roto, R,HR,RBI,AVG,OBP,SB. It’s gotten where the top 3 teams are all very close in all the batting categories but SB. I’m sitting Shields today regardless, but I have Hamilton, D. Murphy, and Cantu on my squad as well. Who do I go with in my 3 OF and Util. slots today out of: Hamilton, Murphy, Span, Adam Jones, Tabata, Ethier, Gardner . Also, I have Ruiz and V-Mart at C (but have no other 1B option than Cantu and V-Mart) and A. Ramirez and Cantu to cover 3B. I’m not too worried about the SB, and am leading the AVG category by a ton, but I need to maximize everything else. I’m sitting Shields for sure, just too much risk in blowing up my WHIP and ERA, but should I automatically plug in all 3 Tex dudes and expect big days? Of course that’s the “early” game so I won’t necessarily know who’s going to be starting “for sure” in the later games when I need to decide. Help!!!!

dballer,

I’d sooner part with Pettitte than Furcal, who still carries plenty of value as a middle infielder who can hit for average, score runs and steal a bunch of bases. Also, it sounds like Furcal will return to action sooner than Pettitte. The Yanks will be very cautious with Pettitte and it wouldn’t surprise me if he doesn’t come back until early to mid-September. Of those available MIs I like the red-hot Stewart the most with Wigginton being my second choice.

dblbogey,

Can’t you just DL Cruz and pick up Torres? That would be my short-term approach. Long-term, I prefer all of your current OFs over Torres.
****************************************
bloodfury,

If you’re not concerned about steals and are already strong in AVG, that lessens the need for both Gardner and Span. I’d go with Hamilton, Jones, Ethier and Murphy (red hot and facing the struggling Shields).

Zach

We don’t have a DL in CBS unfortunately. It would be nice to see Kemp and Upton start living up to expectations at some point though.

Let’s see, Shield strikes out 6, gets the QS, and the W while keeping the ERA and WHIP in great shape, while Hamilton and Murphy go 0-7 with 1 RBI………

Yeah, that helped alot.

We’re not psychics here! Like the saying goes, don’t confuse the outcome with the decision…

Zach

I know. It’s just the worst time for me to be wrong ( I guess I’ll wait and see if the benched guys all have career days first). I mean, like I said, before I even checked here, I was benching Shields anyway, just grrr, y’know?
