Pitch or Ditch for Friday, August 20

or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next day. The
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

PoD chart August 10.pdf

Masterson @
Galarraga – Galarraga worth a shot in deeper leagues

King Felix @
Burnett – A.J. so unpredictable but vs. weak M’s I have to say pitch

Wilson @

Cecil @
– Cecil coming off pounding but he deserves another shot

Haren @
Duensing – Duensing on quite a roll

Jackson @
O’Sullivan – Ditto for Edwin

Hellickson @
Mazzaro – Tough test for Vin but I think he’s up for it

Jurrjens @

Pelfrey @
Karstens – Nice matchup for Pelfrey here

Marquis @

Happ @ An.

LeBlanc @

Bumgarner @

Rogers @
– Kennedy a little risky but good for WHIP and Ks

Bailey @
Padilla – I’m jumping off the Padilla bandwagon before it totally crashes

Which of these Catchers do see having the best rest of the season Miguel Olivo (my current catcher), John Buck (when he is off the DL), John Jaso, Carlos Ruiz, Ramon Hernandez, Jason Kendall, or Yorvit Torrealba?
John from Texas

P.S. Put the show on more

Jumping off the Padilla boat too. Who has the better week Pelfrey or Duensing?

Thanks David

I’m in serious trouble for a shortstop. I only have 7 more acquisitions (from the waiver wire) for my team this year and am in need of a s/s. I currently have Castro from the Cubs and am thinking of dropping him. Should I keep him or try to get one of the following for the rest of the year (5 weeks left in our league): Cabrera, Andrus, Drew, Scutaro, Bartlett, Bentacourt, Desmond, or Janish. I’m looking for a player that can help me in any of the following catagories: runs scored, rbi’s, and batting avg. Hope I’m not asking too much. I’m trying to save the other 6 acquistions for the playoffs weeks. Thanks. Al

I have Broxton as a closer and need to drop him for someone. My options are Ryan Franklin (STL), Huston Street (COL), Ryan Madson (PHI), and Brad Lidge (PHI). Who you would advise I pick up?

Which middle infielder do you like the rest of the way? 5×5 vanilla.
J.Hariston Jr, O.Infante, A.Casilla, J.Bartlett, or I.Desmond

Thanks Guys.

I’d stick with Olivo. Although he’s slumping of late, he’s having the best overall season, so the body of work says he should rebound. Buck would be my second choice but let’s see how he responds to the two-week layoff before considering him.

I’ll take Pelfrey. I think Duensing is bound to put up a stinker soon. I love Pelfrey’s matchup tonight and while I like Duensing vs. LAA, his next scheduled start (@TEX) is scary.

Tough to deal with that acquisition limit but I think Bartlett is a guy worth picking up. He’s been hot of late and has a history of hitting for a solid AVG, so I expect his current .250 mark to rise. He also has the ability to score plenty of runs hitting in a strong Rays lineup.

Go ahead and pick up Franklin (and Street too, if possible) but DO NOT drop Broxton just because he’s been temporarily removed from the closer role. I can definitely see him reclaiming the job within the next couple of weeks once he gets his mechanics ironed out. Remember, he was widely viewed as the #1 fantasy RP heading into the season and is not waiver wire material despite his recent struggles. Drop someone else.

Bartlett for the reasons mentioned above but Desmond is a close second.

Thanks for answering my question about picking up Bartlett and dropping Castro at s/s. I have another question. Should I pick up Desmond as a backup to Bartlett and drop Chris Johnson at 3rd base. I presently have Mark Reynolds and Chase Hundley (from San Diego) at 3rd base. Thanks again. Al

For some reason I’ve been carrying a good amount of 1B-men. i need to know who to start tonight. Billy Butler or Adam LaRoche? and how about Adam Jones or Jayson Werth? I am trying to make a run here to get to the top of the pack. Another question, i picked up Anibal Sanchez for tonight- any suggestions on who i should pick up for tomorrows Starting Pitcher role?

You might want to consider dropping Johnson for Desmond at some point, particularly since you already have two third basemen. But I’d sit tight for now. Monitor Bartlett for the next couple of weeks first. Should he start struggling, you may wind up just dropping him for Desmond.

LaRoche over Butler. He’s got more power potential and is facing the weaker pitcher (Rogers as opposed to Jackson). Werth over Jones. I just have more confidence in him. Plus, very favorable matchup tonight vs. the one and only Jason Marquis. As for a Saturday pitcher, Niese and/or McDonald are my personal blue-plate specials should they be available in your league.

I have Kurt Suzuki as my catcher in a couple of point leagues. In one of them, Ruiz is available and in the other, Ruiz and Soto are. Soto was hitting well before his DL stint and is supposed to come back Sunday. In my minds eye, either one would be an upgrade at this point, but if Suzuki heats up, I might not get him back. Would you make either of these moves? Thanks
