Pitch or Ditch for Friday, August 27

Pitch
or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
their
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next day. The
concept
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
starters,
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
wire
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
“PoD”
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
last
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

CORY’S PICKS

Bullington @
Tomlin

Verlander @
Marcum

Lester @
Price

Anderson @
Hunter
– bounceback for
Hunter last time makes him safe vs. A’s

Burnett @ F. Garcia -
cover up the names; Burnett’s inconsistency makes him
untrustworthy

Bergesen @
Bell

Baker @ Vargas -
see above, then substitute “Baker” for “Burnett”

J.
Garcia
@
Olsen

Gorzelanny @
Cueto
– Gorzo OK for those who can risk ERA/WHIP to chase K’s and
wins

Figueroa @
Pelfrey – not sure Pelfrey is “back” but 3 straight QS earn this
one

Volstad @
Hanson

McDonald @
Narveson

Kershaw @
Jimenez

Oswalt @
Latos
– enjoy Latos while
he lasts!

Enright @
Lincecum
– I’ll take my
chances with Lincecum to the end

Hey guys,

I have all 4 of Santana v Meyers and Nolasco v Hudson for Saturday (and Garland v PHI). Its a H2H league that also counts IP, HR, QS, L, and K/9. I just vaulted to 5th and am looking good to make the playoffs. So far this week I’m ahead in all pitching categories including 2 more QS and W and 2 fewer L.

Should I just start all 4? I usually do when i have dueling guys… Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

5×5 keeper pool. we keep 12 guys. I am working towards next year now and I have Felix, Ubaldo, YoGa, Kershaw, and Weaver penciled into my rotation. SS was a mess for me this year. Y.Escobar, A.Escobar, Theriot, Barmes, Furcal….
Am I crazy to turn down an offer of Andrus and a 2nd rounder for Weaver?? Or is Weaver the real deal and going to keep improving?

Dan in a Head to Head matchup with daily lineup changes check your opponents line and roster. If he only has 1 or 2 more pitchers with starts you may be better off benching Meyers or Nolasco but if he is going to get 3 or 4 more starts you probably need to start all 4 to stay ahead of him in QS and IP.

Yeah, I think I’m going to have to go ahead and “Ditch” Cueto for today. I know these are the Triple-A Cubs, but Johnny’s last two starts were brutal. I’ll “Pitch” Hanson, but I’m very nervous about him against some surging hitters on the fish. This may be the “Year of the Pitcher”, but so far this has been the “Week of the Hitter”.

Dan,

I haven’t played in a H2H league in awhile but definitely agree with cadio’s recommendation…a lot hinges on your opponent’s decisions. But generally speaking, I like it when two of my pitchers face off against each other as there’s a good chance you’ll get a W.

faveri,

Expecting Weaver to improve is asking a lot as he’s already vaulted into the class of fantasy ace. If he can just maintain his current level of performance for the next few years, you’ll have yourself a pretty darn good pitcher. I don’t think you’re getting quite enough in that trade as long as my assumption is correct that in this league a second round pick essentially translates to a 14th round pick.

csupp,

Cueto is definitely a borderline call considering his recent struggles so I’m OK with you benching him for this one. Plus, it usually pays off to be a little more conservative at this point in the season.
