Pitch or Ditch for Wednesday, September 1

Pitch
or Ditch is a strategy for (ideally) daily mixed leagues in which you
pick up
starters on a day-to-day basis based on how well they are pitching and
their
upcoming matchups, then cut them in favor of new guys the next day. The
concept
is that the shallower the league, the more quality starting pitching is
available on the free agent wire, so rather than drafting expensive
starters,
it’s better to build a strong offense and bullpen and let the free agent
wire
populate your starting staff during the season. As a bonus, a handful of
“PoD”
guys emerge each year as worth keeping all year long, like Jair Jurrjens
last
year or Cliff Lee in ’08.

CORY’S PICKS

F.
Garcia
@ Tomlin – good
matchup for the Chief to get back on track

Lester @
Arrieta

Anderson @ Burnett – A.J. is
no longer trustworthy

Marcum @
Price

Scherzer @
Liriano

Hunter
@
Bullington – Hunter very risky but K.C. is a weak matchup

Bell @ Vargas
- gotta take Vargas at home

Suppan @
Figueroa

McDonald @ Gorzelanny
- both worth gambling if chasing K’s and willing to risk the ratios

Oswalt @
Kershaw

Latos @
Enright
– Enright >
Ely

Narveson @
Cueto

Pelfrey @
Hanson

Olsen @
Volstad

Jimenez @
Lincecum
– Lincecum was
probably the 1st or 2nd SP drafted in most leagues so I’m sticking with
him

***Siano says:

-Anderson
showed up on 911, ditch.

-I’m OK with AJ even though it’s probably
a dumb move.

-My
sleeper pick of the year = Trevor Bell.

-I
like McDonald here but definitely risky, last start was not his fault, blame
Milledge.

-Pelfrey
hot hand and risky so quite the conundrum, I’m leaning towards
ditch.

What happened to Nick Markakis this year? he used to be a stud. He is available in my league so I considered adding him to my team. However upon looking closely at his awful season stat line I gave him a wide berth.

Do you guys have any possible explanations on why his output declined so much?

Gryff,

I really have no clue what’s going on with Markakis. He’s been in decline for a few years now and his power has almost completely vanished this season. He’s still good for a decent AVG but that’s about it. And the reality is that he never really was a “stud”, his best season being 2007 (.300 AVG 23 HR 112 RBI 18 SB)…very good but not quite elite. Considering how terrible he’s been in 2010, I’d pass.

Hello guys! Great Show!

I have Cruz back from DL, but don’t know who to drop.
Posible Hitters:
Raburn (It’s been hot, i took him after Cruz went to DL)
Byrd (It’s been OK)
Lind (he’s been better 2nd half)
Manny (I have to give him one more chance)

Posible Pitchers to Drop:
E. Jackson (Hot)
Marcum (OK)
Shields (better, don’t trust him)
My thoughts:
My top 2 are Raburn and Shields, but both are hot latetly.
My needs are: R, HR, SB, RBI. Piching stats needs are only SV, and Shields will not provide any. Considering all needs in batting stats i need to activate Cruz asap. So this leaves the choice to Shields.
Your thoughts?
Thanks!!!

You guys are awesome. I have reached first place thanks to you guys. But I still need help. =)

I have Kinsler coming back from the DL. I am not sure who to drop. What do you guys think?

Adam LaRoche, Ryan Raburn, Luke Scott, Jose Tabata, or Colby Rasmus?

I have technically 2 weeks off because I have clinched first place. So week 22 & 23 doesn’t matter. It’s week 24 & 25. That will count for me. What should I do? Just sit pat and wait or just drop one of these guys now?

Thanks!

mfridzon,

Normally I’d say to drop Raburn but taking into account your needs, you’ve convinced me that Shields is the guy to drop, so go ahead and make that move. You could always spot start Raburn even with Cruz back in your regular lineup, so there is some value in that.

hmangnx,

There’s really no downside in waiting to make that decision but as of now I’d cut Raburn. He carries a fairly sparse track record and doesn’t really excel in any one category. LaRoche, Scott, Tabata and Rasmus all have more upside.

Non-keeper… Must choose between Granderson and Glaus… Advice? Thanks Guys!
E2275

e2275,

Granderson. He’s the more well-rounded player and has at least shown flashes of promise of late. Glaus has been flat out awful for over two months now.
