The Return of the PoD Category Chart!

Hey everyone,

After receiving rave reviews last year, the Fantasy 411 Pitch or Ditch category chart is back for the 2011 season.

PoD chart 4-15-11

For those of you who are new to the blog, here’s how it works.

In an effort to help you make those all important Pitch or Ditch decisions, the 411 tribunal of Mike, Cory and I have divided all the starting pitchers in the Majors into four groups: Aces, Pitch or Ditch graduates, Pitch or Ditch guys and DTMs (players you shouldn’t even think about starting right now). Keep in mind that these classifications are geared towards 12-team mixed leagues. We will be updating the chart frequently throughout the season so stay tuned.

I was offered Derek Jeter and Brandon Morrow for Jose Reyes. Yay or Nay on the trade?

Hey Guys,

Love the podcast. Gets me through train ride home everyday.

(5X5 10 team roto)

Drafted V-Mart and picked up Russel Martin as a late round flier. Short term who should i be starting? And should i look to deal V-mart if Martin keeps this up for another two weeks.

Got 2 Util spots who should i go with out of David ortiz, Vmart, Ben Francisco, and the unstoppable bloomquist?

Thanks

Elraf,

As long as V-Mart is healthy, he should never be benched. I’m all for you trying to trade Martin (not V-Mart) while his stock is sky high. I think Martin will have a solid year but seriously doubt that he’ll outperform V-Mart over a full season. Martin also has a history of wearing down as the year goes on. Even in the short-term, stick with V-Mart. For the two utility spots, I’ll follow the conservative route and start V-Mart and Ortiz. Bloomquist can’t possibly keep this up and you know that once you start him he will go ice cold! At least that’s what often happens to me.

Nice to see the POD chart is back. What are your thoughts on Shields? Is this what we can expect from him or will he rebound? I was planning on dropping him for some FAs that are grads and safer to start like Jordan Zimmermann or Anibal Sanchez. Does this sound like a good idea? The rest of my SPs are pretty good in my opinion: Lincecum, Carpenter, De La Rosa, Lilly, Kuroda, and C.J. Wilson. I’m just looking to make my pitching solid so that I can throw out a pitcher without worrying about the matchups too much since I can’t edit my lineup midweek.

Glenn–NY

Glenn,

Shields has frustrated me too, but I still wouldn’t drop him. Despite his poor ERA last year, he did post the highest K rate of his career and has always recorded excellent BB/9 ratios. His main problem is that he gives up too many homers. I’d wait it out awhile longer. Bench him in a week where he has tough matchups but he’s not waiver wire material just yet.

Zach

Zach,

Tonight i dealt Tori Hunter for Abreu and was wondering what you thought.

Normally i dont think i would have accepted this deal but in our league i felt i should.Abreu is walking a ton and not striking out as much as hunter. He may not hit for as much power but he might steal more and have a better avg as well. do you think i messed up?

our cats again are R,H,HR,RBI,SB,BB,K,AVG,XBH

me again zach i keep forgetting to put my name on it.

Dmenz

Dmenz,

Hunter and Abreu are extremely close in value but I do think that Abreu will help you in more categories, particularly in this scoring format. I’m OK with the deal.

Zach

I agree with Elraf0. F411 is my companion with coffee during my morning train ride.

Content aside, which is considerable, the show is just fun to listen to. For its entertainment value alone I’d probably listen even if I didn’t play fantasy baseball.

James in Austria

Hey Zach, 12 team mixed roto 6×6. I’m dying right now with Zobrist at 2B, and I’m afraid that he’s more like the Zobrist of last year and the guy we saw in 2009. Though I need power, I need something in this position. I was offered Prado for Stanton. Would you take it? Other 2Bs in free agency are Ryan Rayburn (just dropped by someone), Jose Lopez, Orlando Hudson, Espinosa, Freddy Sanchez, and Chris Getz. Your thoughts?

Mike,

Stanton for Prado is fair value but I’m not giving up on Zobrist yet. I don’t think he’ll ever put up another season like ’09 (I thought that was a bit fluky to begin with) but he’s not this bad either. So far, he’s been extremely unlucky in the AVG department (.233 BABIP) and, other than AVG, his stats really aren’t that terrible. Remember, the trade isn’t Stanton for Prado but rather Stanton and Zobrist for Prado. That’s a trade I simply would not make.

Zach

Hey 411!
Great Show!

Would you sell High on Russell Martin now, or you think he might give great decent numbers this year with the yanks?
I already have McCaan….

MF,

Since you already have McCann, selling high on Martin sounds like a good idea. I think Martin will have a solid season but I don’t see his value getting much higher than it is right now. He also has a history of wearing down as the season goes on. If you can address an area of need by dealing Martin now, go for it.

Zach

Someone dropped Jorge Posada in my league. My bench is Andres Torres and Jonny Gomes. Which should I drop for Jorge?

Michael,

A lot depends on what the rest of your roster looks like. If you don’t have a pressing need for a catcher, I might just stand pat. While Posada is a solid fantasy catcher, he’s no more than an average utility player. The Gomes vs. Torres choice also comes down to need: Can you afford to lose some power or some speed?

Zach

Thanks. I have JP Arencibia as my Catcher and the rest of my lineup/pitchers I’m happy with. I play in a 5×5 league (with OBP instead of AVG) and Torres is my best base stealer. I think I will stand pat unless you think Posada is an upgrade from Arencibia.

I see Posada as an upgrade over Arencibia but the difference isn’t worth the loss of your best SB guy. Dropping Gomes for Jorge is tempting but ultimately I’d take my chances with Arencibia.

Zach

Love the chart, thanks!
