Updated Pitch or Ditch Category Chart (7/20)

Hey everyone,

It’s been awhile so here’s the updated Fantasy 411 Pitch or Ditch category chart:

PoD chart 7-20-11

A reminder as to how it works:

In an effort to help you make those all important Pitch or Ditch decisions, the 411 tribunal of Mike, Cory and I have divided all the starting pitchers in the Majors into five groups: Aces, Pitch or Ditch Graduates, Pitch or Ditch guys, DTMs and Indifferents.

Here’s a list of the notable changes that we’ve made since the last version of the chart that was posted in late-June:

Morrow PoD to grad

Santana PoD to grad

Fister PoD to grad

Garza PoD to grad

Luebke PoD to grad

Carmona DTM to PoD

Lilly grad to PoD

Peavy grad to PoD

Porcello grad to PoD

Zambrano grad to PoD

McClellan grad to PoD

That’s all for now. We’d love to hear your feedback!

Do you think Bastardo will keep the closer spot any longer with Madson back? I currently have Santos incoming from a trade and am thinking of dropping Bastardo or Guerra. Logically I think dropping Bastardo makes more sense unless some how he holds on as the phillies are a better team. Whatcha think?

Yeah, I’d rather have Guerra than Bastardo considering the uncertainty surrounding Bastardo’s job status. That said, he’s been so dominant that there is a chance he holds onto the job for a little longer. The problem is that Lidge is also close to returning. I might try to hold onto both Bastardo and Guerra for a little longer but if I had to pick one to drop it would be Bastardo.

I want to add Ogando to my staff, but I would have to drop someone. Which of these would you drop (if any). Pineda, A. Sanchez, Cueto, T. Hudson, Big Irv Santana, Cahill, Luebke.
the other Rich

Personally, I wouldn’t drop any of those guys for Ogando. Erv would come the closest but he’s pitching well of late while posting solid strikeout numbers (much better than Ogando). I know Ogando’s stats jump off the page but I actually wouldn’t be surprised if Erv posts the better numbers from here on out. I expect Ogando to regress as the innings pile up. Keep in mind that he’s already pitched almost three times as many big league innings this season than he did last year.

1) When is David Wright coming off the DL?, and when he does, who should I drop?
Matt Wieters, Howie Kendrick, Ben Zobrist, BJ Upton, Brandon Morrow, or Chris Carpenter
2) Should I sell high on either Heath Bell, Carl Crawford, or Chase Utley
From, Nathan

(1) Mets are expecting Wright back this weekend.
(2) Sell high is a relative term as it all depends on what you can get. Bell could very well get traded to a place where he would no longer close. As for Crawford, I don’t think “selling high” really applies to him. He’s just starting to hit after getting off to a horrendous start. Considering his track record, you have to think that he’ll stay hot for awhile, so why trade him now? You’ve already suffered through the terrible part of his season so chances are he’ll at least begin to pay you back.

I’m glad to see Morrow is a grad now. I just picked up Helton about a week ago and the opportunity presented itself so I traded Bulter for Morrow. I have some decent pitching but I’m trying to add some for my playoff push. Was this a decent trade. Initially I was confident, but I always second guess myself later. Thanks guys!

Yeah, I absolutely do like that trade.

how much do you expect from altuve? in comparison with what chris johnson did last year, can he produce more this year?

They’re two very different players. Altuve is an AVG/SB guy while Johnson carries more power upside. I think Altuve will prove to be the more valuable fantasy player going forward. He has hit well through all levels of the Minors and it’s hard to find high AVG/SB guys at weak positions.

Who would you rather have for the rest of the season Dillon Gee or Jon Niese ? Todd Helton is a FA in my league and i plan on picking him up for some more depth. Who would you drop for Helton ?

My Lineup by the way is
Avila Agon Espinosa Tulo Pablo Pence Beltran Cuddyer Brantley

I’ll say Niese. He’s the hotter pitcher right now as Gee has been a bit shaky of late. Niese also strikes out more guys than Gee does.

I’d drop Brantley for Helton.

i have had morneau on my bench pretty much the whole year even when he was healthy because he was doing nothing. when he comes back in like mid august i assume is he worth playing over moreland? also ive been hearing that the nats MIGHT trade storen. if he was traded would clippard take his spot at closer because hes looked pretty good this year.

Yeah, you pretty much have to play Morneau over Moreland but don’t worry about that until Morneau comes back.

As for Storen, I’d be very surprised if he gets traded. But if that does happen, Clippard seems like the logical choice to close, especially considering how much Sean Burnett has struggled this year.

Should I trade Jaime Garcia and Chris Young for C.C Sabathia?

I answered your question on a previous blog post but, in short, NO!

Hey Zach,
Slowly catching up to #1 spot, back by 8 points! Need to choose between: E5 (who has gone BOOM lately), Placido DL and presently have Altuve (may use a 1 of 6 keepers if he goes well) hanging on waivers til 23rd. Situation is: one needs to go to give me back my pitch or ditch spot in my rotation. I have 157 innings to make up real quick, but dont know who to drop. Have AROD in DL slot (cant keep).
between the 3 of them they fill in 3rd for Arod, and rotate in the MI position.

Closing in on the end of season shower, help please mate!

One more thought…13 team roto mixed league 6 keepers. I presently have a total of 56 saves and have 6 point positions between me and the leader at 86 (who happens to be the #1 I am chasing down). Offensively I am in a very strong position on the board, unlikely the league leader will catch me in those categories. Would it be crazy for me to offer Ausdrubal Cabrera for Brian Wilson, Kimbrel or Mariano straight up, or ask for a compensation player? I can grab Bonafacio off the wire now if I make a move and drop one of the above players from the previous question.
Present closers are Bell, Soria, League and Joe Nathan.

This will however change my forcast for keepers in 2012 to: Stanton, McCutchen, Ellsbury, Ackley, Trout and Price or Shields or Altuve to fill the hole.

I’d drop Polanco. The way Encarnacion is hitting right now, you can’t possibly drop him and he clearly has more power upside than Polanco, who is batting a decent but not great .274. I’m very curious to see how Altuve does so he’s a must-keep until further notice.

I had Nolasco going against SD today and got torched. Right after the game I went ahead and dropped him picking back up Liriano. Now my rotation looks like this
Weaver,Marcum,Garza,Liriano,Morrow and Anibal.

I’m not sure that I need a 6 man rotation so if this was your rotation which would you try to deal and what would you be looking to get in return if what you needed was speed or saves?

Example: Give Anibal and looking to get back Gardner for speed or Hanrahan for saves. Something like that. just need to know what you think would be fair value and who you would be most willing to deal.

Yeah, I was thinking Anibal too. I’m still a fan of his but he’s been a little inconsistent lately despite an outstanding K rate. Maybe try to deal him while his ERA is still in the mid 3’s. I wouldn’t be surprised if he finishes the year with a high-3 ERA. If you could get either Hanrahan or Gardner for him, that’s a pretty solid return.

Hey guys,

I got a trade proposed to me and wanted some input…background is 12 team mix, keeper league $265 cap for 28 players. I’m not in the running this year so im looking to the future. All players below have salaries of $5 and can be signed to long term deals after this year or next year. Heres the trade:

I give up: Cargo and Kimbrel

I get: Heyward, Rasmus, Rizzo (minors no salary) and Pomeranz (minors no salary).

Must promote a “minor” player once they get 300AB or 150 INN and they are assigned $5 salary.

What is your advice?

I’d try to do a little better. Car-Go got back on track after a terrible April and Kimbrel has been one of the most dominant relievers in the league this year. I’m down on Rasmus so if you can get him to upgrade the outfielder from Rasmus to someone else, I’d be more amenable to the trade.

Hey Big Z…
I just received a trade offer in which im giving up Michale Morse for Ubaldo Jimenez, my OF consist of Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, Nick Markakis, Michael Morse, Dustin Ackley and I have Howard at the Util spot because Tex is playing 1B and Butler IF. My pitching staff consist of Cliff Lee, Tim Lincecum, Shaun Marcum, Jair Jurjens, Matt Cain, Ryan Dempster, Cory Luebke, Sean Marshall, Scott Downs, Rafael Soriano (DL), Matt Thornton, Kimbrel, Santos and League as closers.
I was also offered Ian Kennedy and Chris Perez for Billy Butler. which trade you think makes more sense for me? this is a 14 team H2H league.. Thanks!!

Just answered your question on the previous blog post.

Rasmus Benched again. It is very frustrating. Still hold on him?

Depends on who else is available but I’d have a hard time just flat out dumping him. My patience is definitely wearing thin though.

Why would you drop Brantley? He helps me in the SB category and has good plate discipline.

For me, the choice came down to Brantley vs. Cuddyer. Cuddyer has considerably more power than Brantley, a better AVG and just five fewer steals. Oh, and by the way, a better OBP! I’m not saying Brantley isn’t useful, but I prefer all your other players.
