411 Listener League Draft Results Are Here!

Hey everyone,

Last night was the 411 listener league draft. This is the league where both Mike and Cory compete against some of the show’s longtime listeners/viewers. It’s a standard 5×5 mixed format with only two bench spots, which encourages constant add/drops as it is very tough to draft a guy and simply leave him on your bench for an extended period of time. Anyway, here are the results. Just so you know, Mike’s team is the South Larson Hamptonians, aka the team that took Kendrys Morales and Big Erv. What a surprise! In an interesting twist though, Mike also drafted E5. I’m sure Cory was very frustrated by this and wouldn’t at all be shocked if a trade is made sooner rather than later.

Let’s hear from you.

-Zach

Should Justin Morneau be owned in a 10 teamer?

Michael,

If you can afford to hold onto him that’s fine. But in a 10-teamer I’m also fine with you passing on him. He carries a ton of risk.

Zach

Mr Schwartz,

Usually I am all for anyone answering my questions as to me you are all experts but looking over your draft results here i have to say we ended up this year in our drafts with many of the same guys and i was wondering if you would give me your prospective on my team as it stands right now. . I had pick number 4 in this 12 team 5×5 snake draft.

I Am thinking maybe Drew and Altuve could have been better picks and im not sure what to expect from wells but the rest seem kinda solid..im just not sure if they are solid value for the round i drafted them in.

Thank-You in advance
Dmenz

Your pitching could be shaky. Your roster looks good from what I can tell. Hosmer was a steal in the 6th. No offense, but it’s kinda ridiculous he fell that far. Nice grab!

When you guys coming back to TV? We miss you. ha ha ha

If Granderson or Swisher are hurt.. who will get more playing time?
thanks

Luke,

Well, Andruw Jones is the fourth outfielder so I’d think he would be the guy.

Zach

Does Weaver & Choo for Holliday & Daniel Hudson benefit one side much more than the other, or is that pretty equal in value?

Craig,

Nope. The fact that I’m having an awfully hard time deciding which side I like more tells me that it’s a very balanced trade.

Zach

Thanks in advance for the insight. I’ve been offered McCutchen and Bumgarner for Hanley and Alex Gordon? Good move? I need the pitching help.
I could counter and ask for either Braun, Morse or Cruz .

A lot of variables I don’t know about such as; how big your league is, league style, how deep the ss pool is, what your league rosters look like, and what positions your league uses- but I’d probably be all over that deal, especially if there’s at least a semi-viable option at ss.

Bumgarner is what would really make that deal for me. I think he’s gonna be an absolute stud this year. If your ss pool is thin and the league is large, I would possibly put more analysis into the deal and think it over a bit more. There are just too many variables I don’t know to give you an absolute conclusion, though.

If you can get Braun instead of McCutchen it’s a 100% no- brainer IMO, I will say that.

It’s a 10 team H2H league. I have Hardy to plug in at SS. Team has Pujols, A-Gon and Stanton to name a few.
I tried to counter with Braun and he wouldn’t go for it. I accepted his original offer.
Big fan of Bumgarner, just missed him in our draft.
Thanks for the insight!

Jim,

Not a bad deal but I wouldn’t do it. I just don’t like the fact that you’re giving up two of the three hitters in the trade. If Braun was subbed in for McCutchen, however, I’d make the trade.

I enjoy and appreciate different draft strategies, but what was with Bitter taking 6 straight RP’s ? Then Manny Ramirez? Was he auto drafting? I loved his first 5 picks (not that I would draft that way) but I was liking it from afar. I just wonder how he/she got so sidetracked…

Hi – Bitter here….

My draft had everything to do with drawing the #1 pick. I generally don’t plan for it – doing most of my homework assuming a mid-round pick.

My philosophy in the early rounds is to draft value an forget about needs. So by the time I get my 2nd pick, I look at the board and the best hitters left are guys like Mat Holliday, Adrian Beltre and the like. Not bad hitters, but less valuable than a Verlander or Halladay. I fully expected to be drafting offense in the next two rounds but when virtually all of the Hamels and Lincecum are still there and It is a choice between them the likes of Jimmy Rollins and Starlin Castro – I just decide to keep swimming the other direction. I’ll either make some trades or dominate the right hand side of the star board, hopefully piecing together just enough points on the offensive side as possible

So now I’m needing to stitch together an offense. Berkman is a safe choice and Carl Crawford is just the kind of risk/reward pick I’m going to need to pull this off.

So why all the closers? Because I need to stitch that offense together. My feeling is that closers in fantasy baseball are like cigarettes in prison. They are currency. I’m going to want to trade so I grab the commodity that will best help me land bats.

Now the Manny pick – just stupidity on my part. He never figured into my plans, so he had not been iny thoughts for a while. But since I was now looking for guys who might end up hitting near the middle of the batting order, I made a rash decision to grab him – forgetting enitirely about the 50 game suspension. Stupid pick. I’ve already dropped him.

All in all I am good with my draft. More
fun than drafting a well-balanced team
and sitting on it all season, which is what I’ve generally done the last few years.

My hope is to get as close to 60 points from the pitching side as possible, and hopefully trade my way to 25-40 points on offense. We’ll see I’d either of those goals pans out.

Bitter

I liked my draft especially compared to last year when I picked Crawford 4th(?) overall. However, I lost my Internet at 10:27 but fortunately had pre-ranks and about 6 guys in ranked order in my queue and got Mig Cabrera autopicked which was fine. I ALSO HAD THE DRAFTROOM TAKE UP ABOUT A SCREEN AND A HALF SO THAT (<—caps lock stuck, sorry) I couldn't see the chat box or take part. That really stunk cuz that is half the fun.

I had a few times when I was sure players would drop to me but they didn't thus leaving me scrambling with an empty queue. Lawrie, for example I never though would go before my pick whilst Beltre was still on the board. The worst boo-boo though was in rounds 16 & 17. I panicked. I needed a 3B and an SP and had Encarnacion and McCarthy in my queue. I figured I was laughing since Cory picked 1 after me. I wanted him badly and should have picked him 1 round earlier instead of Frenchie I guess. Mike grabbed him though and I in a panic picked Duda forgetting that I wanted a 3B not a CI. In fact I know very little about Duda but it might turn out OK. I realized that and was searching for any 3B to put in until Cabrera became eligible and "ding" McCarthy went to Cory the pick before mine on the way back. I had no idea what to replace McCarthy with (no I DID NOT listen to the show until after the draft only to hear Cory's love for him) I had one guy in my queue that I hadn't used earlier when I had filled it with 2B's. He'd been in there and hadn't been removed yet and "boom" Espinosa was a Canexican. Ooops. I still needed a 3B but could only find Figgins so reluctantly took him justifying it as a good gamble because if he "bombs" I can cut him when Miggy is a 3B.

I caught up but the net loss was my chance to pick Kenley Jansen or Jim Johnson instead of Espinosa and my 4th SP is Neftali instead of McCarthy. Maybe Duda will even it out. Who knows, but after my loss of Encarnacion, my picks should have gone McCarthy then Jansen then Figgins. Funny how things go.

ESPN even had me in 1st place with 2 rounds to go but I punted C's so projected me 4th or 5th in the end. Dave (Canexicans)

Did I see 7 straight RP’s drafted by Bitter?

Just six. I’m not insane!

Oops I guess it was seven.

Not sure how I missed guerra when I reached for broxton.
